Saving my Videos
I have VS8 loaded on my computer on my C drive. What I would like to do is download all my video onto an external drive or at least save it there and be able to work with it from there to save space on my internal drive. Help on this would be appreciated.

Piaso,
I recently installed a "second" HD to my pc. I also wanted to capture the video to my f drive. I changed the setting in VS8 where the capture menu is and it worked.
Are you using the correct drive letter? (D, E, F ???) and the right path?
If you are then I'm lost as to why it's not working for you.

capture video to another hard drive
When you click on the Capture Tab, look down below it, see the
faded "Capture Folder window? next to it is a icon of a folder. Click on the icon folder.
The will activate the window and give you the option of where you want the video to go to.
I usually finish my videos and go to the Share Tab and then create a Video Project and store my finished Video Project in my external back up hard drive.

I use an external drive. When I set it up everything new capture, video files, projects, etc go to it and I can read it. Everything I previously did is unable to be read now as it looks for the external drive. I went in via explorer and moved all of my old files to the external drive and all works fine now. Hope this is what you are talking about and this helps.

Thank you all for your input. I have just been having such a time with this. First off my Cam takes mini DVD's and I have to download them from the edit function. Then because I am trying to download several DVD's and pick and choose excert from different ones I thought if I kept the orginal ones on my external drive and just captured the scenes I wanted I could bring them into the editor and work them and then save the finished product on my external drives as well and make DVD's. Am I trying to do too much to quick with very limited knowledge?

I assume you are taking the miniDVD out of the camcorder and putting it into the DVD tray of your computer, and going from there. Far simpler.
I believe the way to tell the program where files are supposed to go is to go to File > Preferences and make changes in the General and the Preview tabs. Under the General tab, set the "Working folder" to the place on your external HD. Same with Preview.
I assume you are using a USB-connected hard drive. I recently tried to install a Home Network harddrive and found that VS8 did not recognize it as a 'local' drive.

Your dead on the money.. I purchased a new computer that has a plug in hard drive. It fits in a slot in the computer but I also have an external that I had purchased earlier and it does operate on a USB port. I wanted to use that one first. I am going o try you suggestion and see what happens. I have to admit I never realized this stuff was this complicated. Thanks
