Created Disc does not play properly

Post by Chris Clarke »

I record programmes from Win TV which are in mpeg 2 format.
My first attempt was incorrect as I had not made any changes to the menu, once the disc was created it kept repeating the begining of the clip and the audio was out of synch.
I started again unchecking the menu which is fine for me so the disc would play straight away. Once this second disc was created I played it in my DVD player, it started immiedately which was fine but the audio was still out of synch as much as it was before.
The time difference is about 20 minutes ahead of the video which makes the video unwatchable.
Prior to burning it was fine in preview mode and completely in synch until after it was burned.
I am using Movie Factory 5 plus which I have recently downloaded, there does not appear to be any patches for it.
It appears I have lost the first 20 mins of audio after burning.
Apart from unchecking the menu the only other alteration was to decrease the burn speed.
Does anybody have any idea what has gone wrong please?

...the audio was still out of synch... Prior to burning it was fine in preview mode and completely in synch until after it was burned.
This sometimes happens when editing MPEGs. :( The MPEGs get corrupted, but they play OK and don't get out of sync 'till they are re-coded or re-multiplexed before burning.

Some people never have this problem, but my solution was to buy a special purpose MPEG editor from Womble (~ $100 USD). I still use Ulead for other editing, and for authoring & burning DVDs.

A better solution might have been to buy a capture card that can capture to AVI/DV. The MPEG format was not designed to be edited. Most "real editing" (except for cutting & splicing) requires the MPEG to be decoded and re-coded. Since MPEG is lossy compression, this results in some loss of quality. The quality loss is not always noticable. It's something like making a Xerox copy.... sometimes the copy looks exactly like the original, sometimes you can see the difference. (DV is lossy too, but it is not as compressed.)

Thanks Doug for such a clear and detailed response for which I am grateful for.
I understand all what you say, to cut to the chase since I posted my query, I have got videoredo and everything is now perfect.
Videoredo sorts out all the synch problem and really easy to use.
Like you say it is all because of the mpeg format, but now everything fine.
Thanks again for your response.

Hi all !

I have some problems with a DVD created (combined) from two other DVDs with DVD MovieFactory 5 Plus (trial Edition) :

In the creating process, I had to isolate a part of the video file (some seconds).

After that, I created all the menus, etc, and was able to burn the final DVD.

Now, from the point where I isolated the part of the video file, the sound is out of synch. :-(

I read here that I could remedy it with VideoRedo, but at what level do I have to use it ? Before the creation of the DVD (and thus redo all the chapters :-( ) or from the final DVD which I created ?

Sorry if my question is not very clear: my English is not very good...

Thanks a lot for your answer,

Pierre.

Use VideoReDo on the video before adding it to the DVD.
