VS10 doesn't find my Sony HC3

Post by mahakgtr34 »

Problem: After connecting my Sony HC3 videocamera to my WinXP PC with a firewire cable, VS10 can't find the HC3.

I use a Syba (www.syba.com) 2+1 port firewire PCI card, which is installed and according to the Windows device manager works fine.

The problem can't come from the HC3 or firewire cable because it works fine on my Apple Powerbook (imovie HD recognizes the HC3 immediately).

This is really strange as everything is setup correctly and it should work but it doesn't.

any ideas? would be greatful for your help!

I read that tutorial already before I posted this thread. It couldn't help solve my problem.

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed?

If so your camera will be dected as a AV/C tape device in Device Manager, Sound, Video and Game controllers. If isn't detected as stated you will not be able to use the camera in any software application that uses a HD camera.

Your camera must be set up as HD and ilink conversion off.

@jchunter

I have VS10+

@tyamada

I have Win XP Home V2002 with SP2.
the camera is not being detected by the device manager.
Camera is set to HDV and ilink conversion off as suggested in the camera's manual.

Some further info... although the device manager says the firewire card is working properly can it be that it's not?
It is plugged into the 2nd PCI slot... first one being blocked by the graphic s card, 3rd slot being used by the soundcard. Should I try using it in the 3rd slot instead?

Have you installed any other video codecs? or new applications that might have installed codecs? It is a long shot but you might try completely uninstalling VS and then reinstalling. You could also give Ulead Tech support a try.

It can be not working but deteced by windows as ok,k as windows doesn't check if it is physically working, just if the drivers for it are installed ok.

I'd try swapping it.

Have you tried any other cam on your pc?

Try changing you camera settings to HDV->DV and iLink convert to on and plug it in to you firewire port. Your device manager should indicate you have a new device connected and install drivers for a sony imaging device of some sort. It will show up in the device manager as a seperate item.

If the procedure works then your firewire card is working properly, if it doesn't your firewire card either has a conflict with the driver or the card is defective. You could try changing PCI slots to see if you it works there, if it doesn't most likley your firewire card is defective.

Hallelujah!

@tyamada... you saved the day. I did as you suggested:

1. set camera settings to DV / iLink convert to on.
2. plugged it into the firewire port and windows recognized it as Sony DV camcorder :D
3. changed back to HDV and iLink convert to off.
4. plugged it back in and now it's being recognized as AV/C tape device.

Strange thing is that it isn't recognized straight away like that.
The manual of my Sony camcorder doesn't say a thing about that... but I'm good to go now.

THANKS A LOT to all people who tried to help me and especially tyamada for out of the box thinking

Detection

Post by elai1108 »

Hi all,

Can you elaborate on the steps to get PC to recognize the HC3 while iLink is in OFF mode?

I followed these steps but still no luck!
1. set camera settings to DV / iLink convert to on.
2. plugged it into the firewire port and windows recognized it as Sony DV camcorder
< unplug firewire cable >
3. changed back to HDV and iLink convert to off.
4. plugged it back in and now it's being recognized as AV/C tape device.

Thanks in advance!

Elai,
1) You need XP SP2 to capture HDV.
2) I had an earler version of Video Studio installed with an analog capture .dll, which prevented VS10+ from recognizing my HC1 until I renamed the .dll and reinstalled Video Studio.
3) Tymada probably has other suggestions...

Hi jchunter,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am running XP Pro (SP2) with all latest patches.

If you can think of any other suggestions, please let me know.

If you have ever had an earlier version of Video Studio installed, see
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13753

If you are certain that your firewire connection is working, Ulead Tech support should be your next stop. They need to know that some users are having problems capturing HDV with version 10+
