I wasn't suggesting buying another one, just to do the testing which we both agree is the only way forward at this time.

We await test results with eager anticipation

I have now tried using my cousin's MiniDV, and the same problem occurs. There is still NO video preview when I try to capture from my MiniDV tape. I have bought a new Firewire cable, and tried another MiniDV, and the problem persists. I even uninstalled the Firewire card, and it was reinstalled, and there was no change. Is it the IEEE card or the motherboard that is the problem? Thank you all for your help during this difficult time!

Still not conclusive. The only thing we know for sure is that your cousins camcorder doesnt work on your machine either.

Does your cousin work with the videos on another PC?

Just by probability, I would say "It's either the card or the mobo". A new card is relatively cheap, you don't need anything fancy, a new motherboard, hmmm..., we are talking serious money. Chances are you can't get the same mobo, the next model doesn't come with the right socket for your CPU and memory is different as well (been there, done that). So, I would all but eliminate any other source before I would even contemplate a new mobo.

Best chance I can see is your cousin. If he/she has a PC and the camcorder works there, yours is in the clear and you should try your cousins cable (because it works). Next step would be to hook up your camcorder to your cousins hardware. If it works, ok. Take the IEEE1394 card from your PC to your cousins or vice versa and try again. If all these steps work on your cousins machine but not on yours, bad luck, a new mobo is in order.

I agree with Heinz.

Did you read my links? It lists easy to follow testing proccedure and if you came back with answers to all bits we could soon tell you if the firewire card was faulty.

Have you tired another capturing app?

Yes I have tried Windows Movie Maker, but the same problem occurs. I have read through your testing procedure and though that I agree with Heinz too, that it is either a faulty capture card or the motherboard as a whole.

Heinz-oz, I don't think my cousin has firewire on her computer. She has a MiniDV, but they do not edit their video for DVD on the computer.

Do you have or can you get a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable? With that you could hook up both cameras to ensure they are ok.

Other than that, I don't know. don't you know anyone with a firewire connection to their PC/Laptop?

Before you go and spend a lot of money to buy a new motherboard, I would rather buy a cheap IEEE1394/USB2.0 combo PCI card and plug that into my PC. At least you can use that for something later in case it is the mobo that's faulty.

We are running out of options that don't involve a lot of money

do the testing proceedure laid out on my page and come back to us with the results.

As in,

Label your cam, cable and pc items A
Label the KNOWN TO WORK ITEMS item B

So

pc A cam A and cable A does not work.

pc B cam A cable A does this work?

pc B cable B cam A does this work?

pc A cam B cable B does this work?

etc
