Split screen

Post by fatbloke »

Try as I may, I can't work out how to generate a split screen. Specifically, I want to run four video clips simultaneously in a 4 x 4 matrix. I'm in standard PAL format (720 x 576) and I hoped to use four clips sized at 360 x 288 each. Is this possible with MSP8?

Thanks,
Simon

At any given time, are only two clips showing on screen (i.e. the split screen) :?:

What I would do is create two new timelines. Put your videos in each of the timelines, then add the timelines to your Main Timeline, and apply a 2d Moving Path to the timeline (do this for both timelines on the Main Timeline). Make sure the 2d Moving Path has the same Start/End coordinates -- so the timeline position stays the same throughout the entire clip.

OK George - thanks - I think I understand your suggestion. I'll give it a go this weekend.

Does he need to go down the "new timeline" route? I'm still a novice with MSP8 so I may need correcting, but if it were me, I'd get each of the four clips synchronised on video tracks one to four, then apply the four moving paths from the "Picture in picture" presets on the moving path library.

Select the clip on the first video track and press {Ctrl-M} to open the moving path library, navigate to Picture in Picture, and drag any one of the presets onto the clip. Drag a different preset onto each of the other three clips.

I think it depends on type of split screen. If he wanted 4 on the page (one each each corner -- which might be the case based on the resolution). Or whether a split screen with 4 videos on each half was needed (in which case a timeline with the corresponding videos could be used).

I agree it can be done either way -- I've just started using the multiple timelines where I want to treat a bunch of video the same way -- put them in their own timeline, and then apply the effect to the timeline after adding it to the Main Timeline.

Sorry, perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. I want four clips (one in each corner) to run at the same time.

No, you didn't! What Gorf says is the way you want it. You may wish to read p. 107 of the manual to know how you can customise the effects, once you have your clips in the 4 corners. In particular, you may wish to adjust the outer corner position if you find overscan is cutting out too much of your clips.

Thanks for the p.107 reference - sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees! I did assume in my original post (given I gave the relevant dimensions) that a 4x4 matrix would give the impression that I wanted clips in each of the four corners. Perhaps it isn't that simple, I'll find out this weekend when I get a chance to have a go.

Thanks again for the help

First, thanks Gorf for doing a better job at interpreting the original post :)

I had some confusion, which is why the first thing I asked was At any given time, are only 2 clips showing on screen (i.e. the split screen) ?

I think I over analyzed the terms SPLIT SCREEN (i.e. 2), and 4x4 Matrix (btw, how many squares do you envision in a 4x4 matrix?).

I jumped to the wrong conclusion that each Picture-in-Picture (corner) needed to contain 4 clips (i.e. the separate timeline approach). The SiT2005 Trailer used this approach, and it was one of the easiest setups using Multiple Timelines.

OK. I've had a quick look at Gorf's suggestion and I understand the methodology. It seems that I confused the issue by using the terms 'split screen' and 'matrix' in the same sentence. To make matters worse I tried to qualify with clip dimensions. Anyway, I'm pleased I've got there in the end with everyone's help. As rain is forecast this weekend (UK) I won't have to cut the lawn so I can try the aforementioned out properly.

Thanks all,
Simon

Of course the really easy way to achieve all of this is to download the extra PIP's provided by Terry Stetler and myself
