Messed Up Models

I have had some problems with .3ds models I've downloaded in the past. The symptoms are:
Incorrect allignment of segment of the model
A matte black appearance that won't accept lighting, color, or texture
The inability to use groups.

In the past I thought that this was just a problem with the free models I've found online. But I just purchased my first model (a skeleton) and found all of these symptoms at work. The left arm and shoulder is floating off in space. The rib cage is matte black while the rest looks correct. And even though I was told that I could isolate the bones, I am unable to do this.

Is this a model problem or a Ulead problem? Do I need to request the model be optimized for C3D?

Okay, maybe you guys have looked at my post and thought, "All my models do that. I know exactly what he's going through. Wish I could help but I don't know what to do." Or maybe you're thinking, "That's weird, I've never experienced such a problem. All the models I import open perfectly. I don't know why his are doing that."
Whichever side of the fence you fall on, could you post a reply with your personal experience. This was my first post and have been waiting for some answer to my call. I got tired of waiting for user to user feedback I actually emailed tech support yesterday and got a reply this morning. What a dark day when a peer forum is less helpful than tech support.
