Problem with Video Capture

Post by Retrovanian »

Hi,
Have just bought Ulead Videostudio 10 plus.
I am trying to capture from a VHS Video recorder.
I can see the picture and hear the sound fine so my input selections are O.K. My Capture device is showing in the box and I have set output to DVD on the button showing. Standard is Pal 4:3. When I press the capture button the program comes up with a box which says Cannot Render Streaming Video and nothing is captured. I have checked my decoders with the Microsoft Tool for this purpose and a list is below.

Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder CLVSD.ax Version 6.0.0.2314 Compatible with MP10 and MCE
Intervideo Video Decoder INIVIDEO.ax Version 6.o.6.109 Compatible with MP10 only
Intervideo Video Decoder ivimcevd.ax Version 6.0.88.0 Compatible with MP10 and MCE
Ligos Mpeg Video Decoder IMPvgd.ax Version 3.5.0.64 Not Compatible with MP10 or MCE
The preferred Decoder is listed as the Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder.

The two ULead decoders not listed above suprisingly show not compatable with MP10 or MCE, as MCE 2005 is listed on the program box as a supported OS.

My Computer Spec is below

Microsoft XP Professional Media Centre 2005 with SP2.
Intel Pentium Dual Core D940 3.2 GHz
NVidia Geforce 7600 GS 512mb Ramdac
2 gigs of DDR2 Ram
Realtek High Definition Audio
2X 300 gig Serial ATA Hard Drives 7200 rpm
Direct X 9c v-4.09 0000 0904
Pheonix Award Bios V-6.00 PG
Asustek Europa 2 Hybrid Capture Device (TV Tuner Card)
The Motherboard is made by Asustek.

I hope this is sufficient info. Pretty new to all this stuff.

Is that with Video Studio, or some other program?

I'm never surprised when analog capture hardware and software don't work well together. This seems to be especially true for capture devices with built-in hardware MPEG-2 encoders, which yours may have. Video Studio is probably trying to use a software codec.

Did your Asustek capture card come with capture software that's made for it? (I use the special capture software that came with my Hauppauge card.)

Hi and thanks for the reply.
Yes I can see and hear input through Video Studio. The Asustek device came fitted with the machine an HP m7480uk. The only software which comes with this machine is Sonic MyDVD lite edition which is useless for editing and decent DVD Authoring. This is the only software usually supplied with OEM MCE 2005 because DVD burning can be done through the MCE interface directly if you wish using the Sonic program. Microsoft apparently have some deal with Sonic and HP. Some programs like Pinnacle, Roxio and Nero 7 have problems with MCE 2005 and Ulead Video Studio seems to have the least according to relevant Newsgroups so this is why I bought this program. I am not sure about built in Mpeg 2 hardware decoders with this card as I can find very little information on it.
The card is not listed on the Asus website so I am presuming it is an HP special. I think it has a Philips chipset. the machine is only two months old and there is little as yet support info even on the HP website.
I used Magix MEP 10 on my old machine but this has major issues with MCE 2005 and their Support is not the best.

Can you capture with the supplied device/software?

I have NO experience with MCE and not itching to gain some. The digital content protection schemes dreamed up by Sony and MS alone are enough to put me off. You can never be sure what is really stopping you from doing what you want with your own stuff.
