VideoStudio 10+ "Disappears"
My Father has been using Studio 9 for a while and decided to go for 10+. At the same time he purchased a new PC with a pentium D, so fresh install of 10+ on the new PC.
When he tried to load up a previous project, half way through indexing the avi's the program terminated without any message. It did this consistently.
We though it may be a problem with using v9's project files.
So he started a new project, and this does exactly the same.
Is there any problems with 10+ and the dual core processors, or is there a patch we are missing for the OS, XP Pro.

This could be a problem with the particular 'AVI' file. What are the file properties? Where did it come from? AVI/DV files rarely cause trouble (the 13 GB per hour variety from a digital camcorder). AVI/DivX files almost always cause trouble.

New computer and new installation.
Now this might sound daft but..... When you say you had problems with a previously saved VS9 project file - did you also install the original audio and video files on the new computer AND placed them into the same directory structure?
A project file is simply a list of instructions - it does not contain any audio or video. It sort of speaks to VideoStudio and a conversation with it will go something like this:
"open up this video file. Now go to the 10 minute mark and make a cut. Go to the 12 minute mark and make another cut. Now remove that 2 minute section. join the two halves back together using this fancy transition. Add this wonderful scrolling text message at the end of the video. Superimpose this bit of lovely music between the 5 minute and 8 minute marks of the video"
Do you follow?

Not daft at all. The files were on a second HD which was designated D: which was placed into the new PC. Therefore the files are in exactly the same place as before.
VS10+ has no problem finding the directory and starts to load up the project. It is somewhere near half way into this when the program terminates with no message.
I had a thought that it may be his Smartsound files, which are probably in a different location to before, but this was quashed when a brand new project started to do the same thing.

You might check to see the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is Disabled for VS. There's got to be some WinXP Service Pack that was provided in an Update that started making this an issue with programs. I've had a couple of programs refuse to load because of it.
To disable DEP:
To disable DEP:
- Right-click on My Computer, select Properties
- Select the Advanced Tab
- Select the Settings under the Performance section
- In the Performance Options Dialogue Window select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
- In the DEP tab, you will see 2 choices, the last one is to disable DEP for specified programs, which appear in the window at the bottom.

I tried the DEP, with no luck. Re-formatted the HD, loaded XP SP2 with all drivers to the latest versions.
Install 10+, same problem. You can capture, but when editing the program exits to desktop with no error message.
If you persevere, after the seventh time you can actually edit something.
Any ideas?

Hi
Vidoman was referring to the SP1 patch for VideoStudio not SP2 for Windows.
Apparenty there are some bugs fixed in SP1 which can be downloaded from the following link
http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm
Apparently this fixes some bugs and also optimises VS10+ for the new Pentium D processors.

I have worked with VideoStudio since version 6 and have found the program to be very intuitive, versatile, fun to use... but very susceptible to nervous breakdowns when it comes to a hardware problem, which is what I would suspect is happening here. Check the winXP Event Viewer (control panel, admin tools, 'application' as well as 'system' logs) to see if there is any information relating directly to videostudio (unlikely) or to a hardware issue (more likely). In particular, page file errors could be causing this problem (speaking from experience here). The next area to check is the RAM modules. RAM by its very nature is not always perfect, and a faulty module could very easily cause this problem. If there are a couple of modules, take one out, and try the program again. If it crashes again, take the other one out instead. In addition, or instead of opening up the case, try a diagnostic program such as MEMTEST to check the modules (recommended if opening up the case voids the warranty). If there is an error, I would imagine the PC warranty could cover that. If none of that works, move all the AVI files to a different drive and 'Relink' the files.

I am having the same issue. I have had no problems with version 9, jsut upgraded to 10 with the service pack.
I can edit and do all kinds of things, but when I go to create a video file it will start and run for a few minutes then all of a sudden VS10 will jsut shut down with no warning or message.
Jsut yesterday VS9 woked fine without ever having a problem
