Disc Space not enough?

Post by eggs44 »

When Ever I try to burn a dvd, I go though the 6 hour rendering and vob, audio video multiplexing. amd when it goes to burn the DVD it said "Disc Space is not enough, insert another disc and try again", Thats odd, because the file is only 2.6 GB and the dvd's I use hold 4.7 gb, so I put in a new disc and it renders and does ever thing, and I still get the same message, whats wrong with this program now?

When you mention 'rendering' in the context of burning, it implies you have jumped an important step in your work flow. Essentially, we recommend you capture and edit your video (preferably in DV format, though this may not always be possible). Then, after editing, you go to Share > Create Video File > DVD. This will produce a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file. Make sure you choose properties in the selected template which you intend to use later in the burning.

Once you have this file, then close your project and open a new one, but leave the timeline empty. Then go to Share > Create Disc > DVD. The burning module will open. Insert your DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file(s). Make sure the burning properties are the same as the mpeg-2 properties -- check this in the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen. Create your menu and burn.

Using this procedure, you should not have rendering in the burning phase (apart from production of the menu).

While it is theoretically possible to go straight from editing to the burning stage, too many people have had too many problems doing it this way. That is why we recommend the separate steps I have outlined above.

The other thing you should probably check is where you have the burning module working folder. This is in the Preferences item of the first of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen. It can be on a totally different hard disc than the main working folder, and could be on a hard disc with only a small amount of space left on it. I know you said that your error message related to the DVD blank disc and not your hard disc, but this sort of confusion can arise. Again, if you follow the work flow I have outlined above, the rendering will occur on the main work folder and not the burning working folder.

I have tryed what you said above, but that does not work, Most of the files I try to burn are 2 and 1/2 hours to 3 hours, So what I would do was, go to change mpeg and set it at 4 hours to a disc, It takes the quilty of the movie down, but atleast it puts it all one one disc so I dont have to waist my money using 2 discs,

however, I cant do that in your method, In your method it as defaults makes it a 2 hour file, and I i try to make it in to a 4 hour file, wit will not let me, Thats why I have all ways does it my way, I still get audio problems that way, but If a split the video every 2 min, It makes the audip go back on track when one of thoes cuts comes up.

Any way, thats why I never used your way.

As for where the files burn, It all ways went to my documents, VS7, and 3 folders, Convert, Burnother, and burntmp. After every DVD burning I clean out thoes files, Is that what I should be doing or should I be cleaning out somthing else?

I am not sure why you are having trouble in fitting even 4 hours of video into 4.3 GB even at the Share > Create Video File stage. Yes, the various default templates may not allow you to do so. But you can make your own template, with a lower bitrate, by using Tools > Make Movie Manager > New. You set the properties you want, give the template a name, and henceforth it should appear down at the bottom of the templates which appear when you select Share > Create Video File.

As for your burning module working folder, then yes, that sounds right, and you are also doing the right thing by regularly cleaning the three sub-folders out.

So, if I do make a new type of mpeg file, my discs should burn?

I have having trouble finding the Tools > Make Movie Manager > New.

Where would I find that?

If you are using VS10+, then up in the top left corner of the screen are the words "File", "Edit", "Clips", and then "Tools". Click on that. Make Movie Manager is down towards the bottom of the drop-down menu. Click on that and select New. Then in the next dialog box, choose mpeg as the File Format.

Sorry. I no longer have VS7 on my system. In VS 8, the words are over on the top right of screen. You might need to click on each of the words which appear (not the main tabs Capture, Edit etc) because I seem to recall that maybe Make Movie Manager was under a different word in VS7...

EDIT: I have now looked at my VS7 Manual, and Make Movie Manager is located under 'File' in the top left of screen.

Well, I personally would never try to squeeze 4 hours of video on a standard DVD, but that is your choice! As for the settings, there are bitrate calculators which could calculate the exact bitrate you should set. But as a start, you should put the same settings in the Make Movie Manager template that you have used in the past in the burning stage.

I know doing the 4 hour thing is crazy, but for a 3 hour video, I dont want to spend $$ on double the discs, when the second disc would have only a hour on it.

Im sorry for the many questions, but I have one more...How do i find a bitrate calculators? do i need to D/L one or somthing, or is it in with the VS7 Program?

Here's a Bitrate Calculator: http://www.customflix.com/Special/Autho ... Budget.jsp

I would also have to agree with Ken, putting that much video on a single disc seems a bit much. I wouldn't be happy with the quality, but that's just me..:)

Thank you very much :D

I know the quality for 4 hour dvds suck, but unless they start making Blank DVD's Cheaper Im going with my way.

Also, I dont want to split a video in to 2 DVD's and have to get up and change the dvd wile im in the middle of the movie, (BTW: Its movies I have on VHS, not ilegal movies from the net, so plz dont send cop cars to my house. )

I got this:

Recommended encoding mode: VBR
Average video bitrate: 3.50 mbps
Maximum video bitrate: 6.30 mbps
Minimum video bitrate: 1.00 mbps

But thoes arnt any options a can change when going to Make Movie Manager.
