I Am Not Buying MF5+ Until The Bugs in MF5 Are addressed

Post by dblml320 »

I can only speak for myself ... but if MF5+ is built upon the buggy MF5 base, then this upgrade is not a viable option in my opinion ....

No sense buying a mansion built on a crumbling townhouse foundation.

So I would like to hear if bugs are fixed in MF5+ :?: :?: :?:

You are absolutely right. To answer the other question, it was just released, so I guess not yet. Which particular bug are you referring to?

In my case I experienced extreme flakiness in the menus. I have seen some of the bugs listed in this forum in the past couple of days ..

I think there is a more suttle message here however .. If I have to purchase MF5+ to get bugs fixed (actually not fixed) in MF5 .. this is a dangerous precedent.

So I will wait to purchase the MF5+ update until after I get a fix pack for MF5 and verify it is stable .. cause it is not now .. :!: :!:

Sounds like it's the same problems, but with added features at a higher price.

I can't speak for dblml320's list of bugs but:

1. Can't properly save projects
2. Most menu transitions don't work
3. Frequent crashing
4. Creating thumbnails (Frame selected is not the same frame that shows up)
5. Lack of technical support (I've e-mailed them 11 times, not ONE response!

Don't forget... (posted in March)

6. Menu audio background trim
Whenever "Customize" is used to modify a menu setting, the audio trim settings (mark-in and mark-out) are lost. So the background audio trim has to be done again every time. Only the fade-in and fade-out options are remembered.

The MF5 bug that upsets me most is the way AVI captures are stored in 4GB segments, of which I was the first to report many months ago, leading to all sorts of problems when you try to add chapters to the final capture. I have been with MF since version 2 and I will NOT buy another version until all the bugs mentioned have been verifyably fixed. I still use MF4 for most things as it it the most stable version, with bugs that I know I can get around
MF2, MF3, MF4, MF5, VS7, VS10+, VS12, Nero Vision Express. Ricoh and Sony 16x DVD recorder, Sony HC5 High def camera. Also Canopus ADVC110 for AV/DV input through firewire

I Looked at last years updates to MF4 and VS9. By this time last year they both had bug fixing update packs available.

Now updates for MF5 and VS10 may be imminent .. maybe not. But not knowing one way or another makes me conclude they will not be available soon.

I realize there may be growing pains at Intervideo, acquiring Ulead .. but the asset will be worth very little if all the loyal customers jump ship to other products.

Speaking of other products, could anyone recommend any other good authoring programs simmilar to MF5? Seems like Ulead does not care to fix a broken product, but expects us to buy extras for a piece of software that doesn't work. I have no more time to mess with this!

Well,

I had to get a big DVD project done in July, so I bought DVD-Lab Pro. It took an eveing to learn, but wow, the power .. It is for hard core dvd layouts.

It does not have all the extra apps like WinDVD and DVD Copy, etc, that MF5(+) has, but if you need a professional DVD layout, this is the tool.

With that said I will still be buying a copy of MF5+ when the bugs are fixed. It is easier to use for quick DVD layouts and so worth it for me to have both packages.

When did THAT happen? That explains why they are cramming all of the Intervideo products down our throats with the install of DMF 5+. When I installed DMF 5+ all this Intervideo stuff got installed WITHOUT the option to deselect them. Including stuff that goes out to the internet without my permission. If it wasn’t for my firewall prompting me, I wouldn’t have known they were doing that.

This is just WRONG. I want the options to install the features and addons I want. AND I can't seem to find an easy way to uninstall things like the Intervideo Information Service.

Hi dblml320,
I like the DVDlab freedom in menu design, especially the node connections, auto-actions, etc.
But it is important to note that there is no encoder included (no MPEG2, no Dolby!). And even the Canopus ProCoder I use to encode video has no Dolby support (sad, but true).

John,
I hope you can disable the Intervideo Information Service, can't you?

Yes, I there is an option to disable it, which I set.

There's another service called InterVideo WinCinema Manager that comes up running in the task bar. Haven't found an option to nuke that execpt through msconfig or the registry, which average users don't touch. I SHOULD NOT have to go through these gyrations to control this stuff.

I want these pests OFF my system!!! Neither shows in Add/Remove Programs. Grrrrr.

Unwanted stuff, phoning home

Post by snoops »

Hi John,
I SHOULD NOT have to go through these gyrations to control this stuff.
I agree, but this is done by uncountable and well-known software, not just Intervideo. Man, look at the task tray on a PC from somebody that doesn't spend time checking and eliminating the "parasites". Not to mention the security threat if abused.

Microsoft itself, like Windows Update but also services for incoming access (Remote Desktop Help, Telnet, Terminal Services, Remote Registry, etc. etc.) that have always been targets for attacks in the past. Most need to be manually disabled (patches for unchecked buffer exploits seem to come out weekly). Other services are hidden in the registry.

The Macromedia Flash plugin does it the reliable way, by going thru the browser that normally has internet access anyway. It does have an option to disable the update checking and auto-update, but you'll probably check this after getting the first notification on the task tray.

Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office, etc. etc. love to preload stuff into memory to make the software start faster... if needed. I hate this. Want the Reader to start real quick? Remove that startup item, and relocate all of the Reader plug_ins except Search* and reflow* into the Optional folder (which is there for this purpose). Acrobat Reader now appears immediately because it no longer loads and initializes 22MB of normally unneeded plugins and scripting controls.

Nowadays I'm actually happy when a product simply allows a Startup item or Service to be disabled to prevent activation, without further hunting.

I hope this does not affect the Ulead products further .. the website www.dvguru.com :

In yet another PacMan style transaction, Corel has signed an agreement to acquire Intervideo. Less than 2 months ago, InterVideo completed their acquisition of Ulead. This will give Corel a pretty hefty line of digital media products, too many for me to keep up with. With Ulead working hard to carve out a place in the video editing world, will this be a good thing? :?:
