Question - So frustrated!

Can someone please explain to me how to take a colored digital photo and change parts of the photo to black and white and leave other parts of the pic the orginal color? I just can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks!

It's quite simple really. There are tutorials available here http://www.pircnet.com/ and you can even enroll in a free beginners workshop there.

You duplicate the image, extract the object you want in color of the first, change your base image to grey scale or black and white and paste the color object into this. That's all.

Still not working

Ok so I have been doing that (and I tried it again) it still isnt working for me. The problem is when I paste the color object into the grayscale base image, the object will not stay in color - it automatically turns into the grayscale. I can't seem to figure it out.

Thank you so much for replying and trying to help me out. I will look into those tutorials.

You need to convert the grayscale image to 8 bit color (it will stay BW) and then paste the color image in then it will work. Or you can paste the object in the grayscale image, hit invert selection, copy that and go back to you color image and paste the black white image into the 8 bit color image you selected the object from.

Basically you can't paste a color object into a grayscale file (remember that file contains only shades of gray and no other color info).

Make sense now?

There is an easier method if as you state, you only want to change part of a single image without cutting and pasting. I am using PI 11.

Select the Lasso Tool, and on the Tool Options Bar, check Smart Lasso and click to enable the icon named Select on Object.

With the Lasso Tool, select the area you want to remain with Color.

On the Command Menu, select Selection and then Invert.

Again, on the Command Menu, select Photo, Enhance, and then Monochrome, to discard the color in the remaining image.
