tape noise - audio filter order

Post by lazael »

Not having a very good ear, I can't quite decide whether applying fiters in a certain order has much effect. I have some VST filters and an MPEG2 copy of a VCR tape that has bad audio - hiss, dropouts, distorted voices, too much bass and low volume in patches
The filters I'm using are - equaliser, compressor, normalise.
Equalising first (at the top?) allows me to get rid of most of the hiss, while excluding normalise brings down the dynamic range.

By the way - capturing 6hrs mpeg2 with MSP8 and my Funtv card results in zero audio sync problems. Unlike when using Cyberlink's PowerVCR. Of course I have to give up on scheduled recording :(

First applied = first calculated, so yes it does make a difference. This can be seen in MSPro 8's Effects Manager; if you right-click a filter, audio or video, you'll find options to move them up/down as long as more than one is applied.
