It would propably help if you told us where in the great wide world you are - and what were the properties of the file you burned to DVD - it is possible that you have used an audio format which is not compatible with your TV system.

I'm just down the M4 in Swansea. The problem is not on my TV it is on my PC after the mpg file has been created. The first one I did was OK, but I cannot get subsequent ones to play with sound, I have not transferred the file to disk.

With the file you created in the VS timeline or library pane, right click on it, copy down the properties, and post them back here. You could, for instance, have produced a file with Dolby AC-3 audio, but for some reason your Dolby codec is on the fritz or has gone missing...

And further to Brian's question, can you tell us also something about your computer set-up, the origin of the video you used in the project, and if possible, its properties as well.

When you go to the share tab and select Create Video file, then choose your save location and format etc.

Did you choose 'Custom' if so select 'Options' and a dialog box appears.
On the 'General' tab check that 'Data Track' is set to [Audio and Video] and not [Video]

If you are using one of the pre-defined formats such as [PAL DVD] look at the 'properties' information at the bottom of the [Create Video File] dialog box and note what audio parameters have been set.

If the audio parameters are wrong - possibly changed inadvertantly, then exit the dialog box and select Tools | Make Movie Manager. Here you can edit the chosen format to correct the audio setting.

If your chosen format is not in the Make Movie Masnager list then go to
File | Project Settings and edit the format from there.

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 5744 kbps)
Audio data rate: 192 kbps
Can any of you see anything wrong in these settings please?

Barry I'm also having this problem.

All that I've altered in the output templates is to change the field order to lower field first from Frame based.

I've checked and double checked.
When I set up the menus when you play in the preview the sound is there on the PC. When you play the AVI separately again the audio is there but once it is rendered and burnt to DVD not a squeak is heard.

Barry -- you've told us the audio bitrate, but you haven't told us its type. In the audio section of the properties box, it should say either LPCM, mpeg layer 2 or Dolby AC-3 (either dual channel stereo or 5.1). If it is Dolby, people have had trouble with a bitrate lower than 256 kbps, and yours is 192. Try raising it to 256 kbps and see what happens.

Ken,
The settings are as follows
PAL DVD, SPEED 70 DVD VR COMPLIANT VIDEO DATA RATE VARIABLE 5744 KBPS
AUDIO SETTINGS ARE AUDIO FORMAT DOLBY DIGITAL AUDIO, AUDIO TYPE 2/0 (LR) AUDIO BIT RATE 384 KBPS.
I just tried it at 256 and 384 but still no joy.

Barry:

Did you ever solve your problem? I'm having the same issue on only one project. Captured audio is fine (HD, mpeg2). After my editing in VS10+ the audio is still fine. After saving to a file, taking GREAT CARE to match all the appropriate settings, I have video but no audio.

Please click here --> Image so that we can then view your system specifications.

Dolby is only supported from VideoStudio 9 upwards. Previous versions required a plug in which I doubt is still available.

Let me elaborate.

As we speak, I have an edited file on my timeline. The audio plays fine.
When I either save, or batch convert, this file, the process goes well but the audio does not play (on a variety of software players). A click on
properties shows the audio details to be the same as before the save.

But,

This all applies only to this particular project, which is Tape 2 of a 3 tape HD video series. Tape 1 is successfully edited and saved. I have yet to do tape 3. Furthermore, the UNEDITED mpeg-2 capture of Tape 2 also plays fine. The problem is only with the EDITED video file. I did NOT do any audio editing.

Some clues?

I tried some color/hue/brightness etc editing of some clips. I noticed that the audio disappeared on these clips. When I reversed this editing, the audio returns. I subsequently abandoned this particular processing and uninstalled and reinstalled VS 10+. At present, Tape 2 has only got trim type editing.

Hi melk

I noticed you mentioned HD, John our resident HD man may ask the right questions here. But it sounds like an editing problem rather than a HD issue.

In the meantime can you post the properties of the original video and the new rendered video file.

So with only trim type editing, you have no problems.
The sound problem only occurs when using filters. (yes?)

Trevor: Thanks. No, I abandoned the filter-type editing. The project in question only involves trim-type editing. And remember that I have already successfully captured, edited and saved another tape without any problem.

The audio properties on the file are the same as those off the original HD video camera tape. MPEG Audio layer 2 stereo, 48Khz, 16 bit, 384Kbs.
