Semi-Transparent Model Imports

Post by BillRobert »

Been a big fan of this software for years, but I do have one recurring problem which is kind of driving me nuts.
I cannot get .3Ds (3D Studio Max) models to import properly, The shape is there OK, but I am getting this weird semi-transparent thing going on in the model itself. I have even tried converting these models to DirectX models and am having the same trouble.
I've tried WinConv, Deep Exploration, even 3DSMax itsels, to no avail?
Am I missing something, or am I just stuck?

Many thanks to one and all who reply....

Bill,
I use both .x and .3ds models all the time with COOL3D PS. Upon importing the models you have two choices: C3D and D3D. C3D will import with no texture, D3D will. Also another consideration is that the .3ds was not created and packaged correctly. By using a program like Deep Exploration, one can unpackage the model including its texture. This would help determine if the texture is actually the problem. Other areas: Were these downloadable models or created by yourself. Are you all caught up on your Direct X and graphics card drivers? Also a sample pic would help.

This part I've got down. I've been generating models in Cool 3D for a while, and when I do the .d3d option I get a textured semi-transparent thing. When I import the .c3d I get a beige, semi-transparent object.

As far as I know my drivers are fine, as well as my Direct X Version.
99% of the models I have been using have been made in an app called Ldraw and from there have been converted to .3Ds files. I downloaded one to try it out, and it is problematic as well.

Bill,
One possibility is when converting your Ldraw model to .3ds something is getting lost in the conversion process which is resulting in a failed import in COOL3D. Have you tried simply downloading a .3ds model from the web and importing it into COOL3D with .D3D option?

Here's a site with tons of free .3ds models.
http://www.amazing3d.com/free/free.shtml

Give it a go and see if you were able to correctly import the model with all its attributes, texture, etc... If you were successful, by process of elimination, I would deduce that it is this conversion step from the Ldraw app to .3ds that is giving you the trouble.

Hope this helps.
