stuttering and falling at the first hurdle

Post by monstar »

Hi all
New to forum, enjoying reading about other peoples problems ( it seems! with all this dvd burning malarky!

The more i read the threads on here the less i seem to learn...seems so many things can go wrong when editing/burning these films.

...so heres my problem..

Why, when i download via my dv camcorder using firewire..does (a) the picture ( even on final preview - let alone whilst actually capturing ) appear a little jerky..now - once burned..give or take..the pic seems fine..but am still a little curious..i mean...do i need a separate graphic card to get better? final project?

( b) My sound, whilst capturing...is terrible...always jutters and recently it seems, this appears very jerky on playback even once burned...why is this? through the camcorder etc..all is well..so whats going on? Please any tips or answers?

I dont want to spend a lot of time editing my masterpieces! only for the finished project to not look as good or sound right...do i need a better graphics card, sound card? Again, have edited before a little and all is passable..the pic and sound was ok..but am now at the stage of actually putting edits together and was just wondering can i get a better result somehow? and def, this recent development of sound juttering problem needs sorted?

So, any adivce please.

Could be your system not up to the task, programs running in the background, etc., but you don't give us much to go on. Give us details of:
∙Your pc specs
∙Your clip properties
∙Your project properties
∙Your burning properties
Have you taken a look at the Recommended Procedures at the top of this forum?

As Black Lab says, you don't tell us much more than your problem -- not even which version of VS you are using! But anyway, my first suspicion, from your description, would be that you are using DV Type 2 Encoder and you computer may not have the resources to support this well. Normal indicators that there is a problem here are precisely jerky video and/or erratic audio. In the Capture page, go to the Options icon, and if it is set to Type 2 (as it often is on installation by default), change it to type 1 and try capturing again.

FWIW, after 4 years of digital video editing, I am just experiencing right now a similar problem. I had to change my Firewire card last weekend, and since then, my captures -- while capturing -- appear jerky, whereas before they were always, invariably smooth as silk. And it does this whether I am using VS10+, WinDV or Adobe Premiere 2 to capture. But for some even more incomprehensible reason, an old version of VS8 I keep on my computer for possible use on this Forum, captures smoothly. I should add that once captured, the video plays back fine in the monitor and final product. And I should also add that my computer captures Type 2 as well as it does Type 1. Go figure. I will be concentrating on the problem today, but I suspect it is the firewire card. If I find out anything, I will post back here.

Ken, I suspect it's the firewire cards use of the PCI bandwidth that's causing your symptoms. As long as the video and sound is ok after, who cares? I never even watch my captures since I capture the whole tape and automatically split by scene at capture.

Ken,
There have been a few occaisions when my highly tuned system has suddenly developed a fault matching that which you describe. I found that on each occaision it was due to a slightly loose cable connection - invisible to the eye. A good press with my thumbs of all the connections - IDE cables and so on - cured it.

Heinz -- I know, I know. Who cares if the end is OK. It's just that I tend to be a perfectionist, wanting to know -- in the words of the immortal Prof Julius Sumner Miller "Why is it so?"

Steve -- will check my connections (and also those of the Firewire card!!!)

Cheers

Yeah, yeah, Ken, I know too, that's why I don't watch the beginning of a project i.e. capture, I don't even look too closely at the source window when I trim, the only thing I really do look at is the previews after I done a title or effect or transition. That, I look at on a real TV though, not a PC monitor with usually too high a resolution, showing me frightening imperfections that you can't see on a TV.

As long as the end result is perfect, this perfectionist is happy.
