Audio mixing panel - problems with volumes in finished video

Post by momnot »

Hi I really hope this is a simple mistake I am making.
Using Pro v.8 free download to try and see if I like it.
Fantastic can do anything I like - now the only problem is I am trying get a bit more complicated and am now trying to add another audio track and alter the volume levels.
In the Audio mixing panel, everything seems fine - I have used the 'apply' key and it plays with the levels I require.
You can even see on the timeline that the audio tracks are altered.
When I then create the video file - and play it - imagine my frustration when I hear that all the volume levels are exactly as recorded and all the work I have done through the Audio mixing panel has done precisely nothing.
Please tell me where I am going wrong... I am in desperation...
Jennifer.

The trial version will not accept the SP1, which corrects many of the shortcomings of the AMP.

Can anyone confirm this problem.

Okay, so if this is a specific problem on the audio mixer for Pro v.8 free download version - can anyone confirm to me that if I go ahead and actually purchase the full version that the problem will be cured?
Many thanks,
Jennifer.

I have sp1 and I STILL do not use the MSP audio mixing panel.... it makes no sense. (I instead import my finished MSP file to studio ten or Liquid for the audio work and burning to disk)

You can set up different sound tracks and and even export to Mpeg file in DD5.1... but then when you import to any disk burning program, the DD5.1 is lost.

The way I understand it is that Mpeg audio does not support DD5.1. Something about a DOLBY lisencing issue that allows DD5.1 to be placed ONLY on output disk. MSP does not have direct timeline to disk ability so the DD5.1 option is virtually useless.

Actually MSP8 does have DVD recording; File/Export/(DVD Disc Recorder [DVD-VR] or DVD Authoring). DVD Authoring brings up DVD MF 4 LE, or the full version if you have upgraded it.

In either DVDMF4 or over or DVD Workshop's Project Settings you can opt to pass through (do not convert) DVD compliant files, and this includes their audio mixes. You can tell it's doing this because the mux goes quite fast.

Try this: export a 5.1 DD mix to the HDD, burn it using "do not convert" in DVD Authoring, DVD MF or DVDWS2 then re-capture the video off the DVD in Video Capture using the DVD capture plugin.

When loaded back to the timeline the properties are still 5.1 DD.

I agree with Terry that MSP8 DOES permit making 5.1 DVDs; I've done this, albeit only when beta testing SP1, as most of my video work is stereo or even mono and I normally use AC-3 2.0. The SP-1 modified AMP works OK for me, although it was hell before SP-1.

This is not what I am seeing.

If I set my templete for NTSC, widescreen, DD5.1 sound, do my editing, make my multiple sound tracks, then I create my video file. I then choose EXPORT to DVD AUTHOR and movie factory comes up. The sound setting is on DOLBY2 CHANNEL The AC3 (or DD5.1) option is greyed out and can not be changed. As a result I get DOLBY stereo instaed of Dolby 5.1 surround.

Not talking about Dolby.

Post by momnot »

Hi I wasn't talking about anything fancy like Dolby and other effects.

I was simply trying to add a second track containing a voice over, onto the time line, and adjust the video sound through the Mixing desk - to alter the respective volumes.

There are only two tracks involved - it seems to do it at the time - but then when you create the actual .avi file - lo and behold - all the volumes are back to exactly how they were before you took all the time and effort to mix them.

Can anyone confirm that this does not happen in the full (non trial) version of Pro 8 - with the SP1?

I confirm that the full version with SP1 behaves correctly. Of course, you have to apply your changes after making them, otherwise they will revert.

Sorry MOMNOT.... didn't mean to highjack your thread.... Just trying to get across my reason for not bothering with audio work in MSP.

No worries - struggled through and done it 'long hand'

Post by momnot »

That's okay Neonbob - I was just really pi$$ed off and frustrated at the time, when what I was trying to do seemed such a simple request.

I've been through my footage and manually reduced the volume on the video audio track and up'ed the volume manually on each voice over segment to get the finished product - check out my attempt at :
http://www.video.google.co.uk/videoplay ... 8&hl=en-GB

I would love to buy Pro v.8 but not entirely convinced it will do what I want with the SP1 installed - also, I note, no-one has given me any solutions to my 'file error' posted this morning.
Anyway, all the best,
Jennifer.

To be honest Jennifer... I have a fair few editors... liquid, msp, studio, etc and I find that NONE of them are perfect. Sometimes its the program at fault, sometimes it's just the machine you are running it on... doesn't really matter because the end result is the same. I enjoy MSP to no end... it is a really great editor, but I do find its audio section a little weak. Studio on the other hand has really great audio editing features but sucks on the video editing end. So the 2 programs compliment each other greatly.

But that is what I find video editing all about: owning more than just one editor and understanding each one's strong and weak points.

So the bottom line is that MSP is a really great editor, but as with all the others on the market.... I would be a little hesitant to depend soley on it.

I agree. I edit in MSPro most of the time, but also use Premiere Pro (with and without the Matrox RT.X100 realtime hardware), VideStudio, Avid Xpress DV etc. etc.

"Apply" button greyed out

Post by wdseith »

Can anyone tell me why the "Apply" button on the AMP in 8.0 SP1 would be greyed out? Even when it is not greyed out (which is extremely rare) clicking it doesn't seem to make the adjustments I've selected on the timeline. Using the rubber bands to adust the audio levels is limiting and frustrating at best. Also, how do I keep the audio level from defaulting back to the mid point every time I edit the clip? Is it possible to make a global adjustment for all of the clips on the audio track at one time and lock them in? I'm getting tired of having to adjust the audio levels every time I make an edit.

To make a global adjustment, do not use the AMP. Apply the Amplify audio filter to one clip and adjust the level up or down to suit. When you have done so, select the clip and Copy it (Ctrl-C). You then globally select all the other clips you want at the same level, right-click and Paste Attributes.
