Sony DCR SR90 Users

Post by dave_angel »

Was thinking of starting a SR90 thread, firstly to see how many owners there are using the Ulead Video software and secondly to share common problems with the associated files and burning.

I have been trying all sorts of alternatives and am now trying Ulead to see if this is the solution i am looking for.

I have read the articles/stickys saying about creating video file first and tried but failed to then create easy menu's and transitions etc.

I have managed to create a disc now at 90% quality and about 50 mins long - i did this on the HQ 60 mins setting. This si the first time a dvd project burn has worked to completion.

Is there an easy solution to add tranisitons etc to our Sony clips and easily author onto dvd with simple menu's etc?

Another question i have for other users is whether or not there are settigns that keep a "true widescreen" recording is maintained and recorded in full onto a dvd and also played on a tv in full widescreen without losing any parts of the images or distorting the images?

Thanks

VideoStudio 10 Plus should do everything you need but you just need to spend a little more time learning how to use if first.

Hi Dave,
Your SR-90 records in DVD-compliant mpeg2, which should let you quickly edit and burn DVDs with excellent picture quality.

You will have to learn how to manage video and audio properties because that is the key to successful video editing. Follow the recommended procedure at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27

Note that you have to control the Aspect Ratio property - set it to 16:9 - in all phases of editing (Project Properties), Creating Video File, and when Burning the DVD (SHARE/Create Disk).

Adding transitions is easy but you can only place them between video clips (cut the video with the scissors control).

The DVD menus are somewhat of a chore in version 10+ but with a little practice and playback before burning, it all works.

Thanks JC

I have tried to follow the "recommended", maybe i have mistaken something - can you help/advise?

I have create the video file fairly quickly (inlcuding all my transitions etc between chapters)- but when open up file into dvd burn section it has it all in one file and can not create the chapters easily for the DVD burn (the auto button is greyed out) - is there an easyway to do this or a way to get the previous project settings to be imported into the dvd burn process?

Thanks

Dave,
The transitions that you inserted into the Edit timeline, between video clips, do not mark out chapters. I use them mainly to indicate a minor scene change (of subject matter). When you create a video file of the whole project, everything is rendered (compiled) into a single video file. Enable Smart Render to avoid rerendering unedited sections of your video files - this speeds up the process.

When you open the Burn module (SHARE/Create Disc, with empty Edit timeline) use the "ADD Video" button to select your video file. Notice the three insignificant icons on the lower left of the burn window. This is where you have to manually set you video and audio properties for the DVD burn. It would be nice if Video Studio whould inherit the properties from the file that you have selected but it doesn't (reliably). Notice the one on the right is where you select the widescreen (16x9) aspect ratio. The one in the center has all the other properties. Make certain that they match your video file properties or Video Studio will try to convert everything.

Check "Create Menu", mouse on your video file in the Burn timeline to select it, and then the "Add Edit Chapter" will enable and pressing that will open yet another window where you can use the jog control to select chapter entry points. (I have never tried the Automatic button.) When you have selected them, press OK, to retun to the Burn window and press Next to get to the next screen where you can select pretty menu backgrounds (I uncheck Motion Menu because it tekes a lot ot time to make them)

Click the icon of the Remote control on the far left to see and operate your chapter selections before you proceed on to burn the DVD. Use R/W DVDs until you get everything sorted out or you will have a lot of beer coasters. :D

Thanks JC very very helpful and clear. I think i am getting there now.

One final little q - is there any easy way in the technique/process you mentioned to check the size of the Video file that you are going to burn will fit onto the 4.7gb disc?

I did a "create dvd" attempt (and cancelled before actioning) to see if it would fit on dvd and it seemed to, but when i actually burned to video and opened that in "create disc" it was slightly too big for the dvd.

Maybe i can tweek the settings a little bit or maybe just take big chunks out and do over two discs

I would think that your 50 minute video would fit fine in one DVD.

You can check this out, using Windows Explorer to see the size of the video file.

Your camcorder might have encoded in a bitrate higher than the 8000Kbps that is typical or it might have used "Constant" bitrate rather than Variable." I would select Variable when creating the video file rather than dropping the bitrate

You might also have set the Audio properties to one of the "less-compact" formats, such as LCPM. Dolby audio works very well and will save you quite a bit of space on your video file.

You should be able to fit on a DVD by making these adjustments.
