VS Temp files?

Post by erock1 »

I hope this post finds everyone well and enjoying the summer!

I'm using VS9 and my PC OS is XP Home. I'm noticing temp folders & files being created and wonder if they are necessary or can be deleted. I'ce searched the VS forum but didn't find any discussion.

The folders & files are found in the "Temp" directory under "Local settings". Hre is an example of the folders names:"WERc86Adir00", "WERd259.dir00" "WERcadf.dir00" and the like. The files that are in these fiolders are named "vstudio.exe.hdmp"and "vstudio.exe.mdmp". My concern is that therse temp files contain anywhere from a few MBs to 116 MBs!

TIA,
Erock

Hi Erok,

Those Temp Files can be safely deleted. They are nothing more then files created while using various programs. Some programs are more tiddy and clean them up once you close them. Others are not, and leave the temp files used. In fact to better performance, it is recommended to clean up the temp folders, so the programs, such as VS as sufficient space to work with.

Another such Temp Folder is located under your Windows directory. Those files can be deleted as well.

Don't delete the Temp Folders though...:)

Ron & Kenneth,
sorry for the tardy reply. Summer chores (using my new Panasonic Pv-GS300 :D ) has got me a bit behind.
Thank you both for the replies. I've always used the rule of thumb that any files that haveen't been modified in at least 2 weeks old in the "temp" directory could be safely deleted but this is the first time I've seen such large VS temp files so I just wanted to be sure.

If in doubt do it the safe and easy way.
Go to Windows Explorer and right click a drive letter.
Select "Properties" and alongside the pie chart is a disk cleanup button.

Not as good and efficient as doing things manually but is a safe option for those who are not quite sure of what they are deleting.
