No sound when importing video from DVD

Post by Tarantino »

Hi,

I'm new to the message board. I've searched around for solutions but thought I'd just register and post my own question.....

My problem is as follows;

I have VideoStudio 8. I have just recently purchased a Sony DVD recorder and was intending to transfer all the kid’s videos to DVD so as to do away with the Video recorder.

However, when "inserting video" to a project from a DVD (recorded on my Sony DVD recorder) I appear to have no sound. The DVD has sound when played on the DVD recorder, Power DVD (PC) and Windows Media Player (PC). So, it appears that the sound is getting lost in the importing process.

I have read a few forums relating to the same problem and most of them seem to recommend an AC-3 decoder. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of the AC-3 decoder but I'm still having the same problem. I have tried altering the recording set up on my DVD recorder but again with no success.

I tried this with another home made DVD (not recorded from my Sony) and the sound was there! However, I did notice this time that the audio wasn't AC-3, but PCM.

Do I have to do anything more than install the AC-3 decoder? I read that you can get a AC-3 plug-in for VideoStudio. Is this any different?

Does anyone have any solutions?

I appreciate your time so far.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert

Welcome to the forum.

You are correct that VS 8 does not support Digital Dolby.

The free AC filter (from sound forge) should allow you to play Digital Dolby. But you cannot re-code the Digital Dolby, and as such will not be able to create a disc with DD. The AC filter I used was ac3filter_1_01a_rc5.exe. ( that was a few years ago)

The DD plug-in supplied by Ulead allowed you to use Digital Dolby with VS 8 and re-code the project to DD. The plug-in is not worth the money, you are best using your money to upgrade VS 8 to either 9 or 10 Which supports DD.

You don’t say what audio your DVD is using from your Sony recorder.
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties. What are they?

Hi Trevor,

First of all, thank you for your informative reply. Much appreciated.

I checked the Audio used by my Sony recorder as you asked. It is "Dolby Digital Audio".

I looked back at which AC-3 filter I downloaded. It was ac3filter_1_09a.exe. also from Sound Forge. It didn't seem to make any difference though. I'll probably have to upgrade as you suggested. I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

Cheers & thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert

I remember having some problems with the Ac filter and VS 8.

Not sure which order you had to install.

It may be worthwhile doing a ‘Repair’ to VS 8 after installing the AC filter.

Try to install VS 8 again then run the ‘Repair ‘ from the install screen.

At least you may get the sound working.

Hi Trevor,

Thank again for your reply.

I tried what you suggested but no change I'm afraid.

I think I have now accepted that I'm going to upgrade, probably to VS10 OR VS10+. I've been reading about the VS10 and VS10+ on the Ulead website and it looks the business. VS8 is great but I find there are one or two things that could've been improved on. It looks like VS10 takes care of these issues plus it has many more features.

I have a lot of plans since (and before) I got the DVD recorder - transferring old VHS videos & analogue camcorder tapes to DVD etc - so I think it's worthwhile getting the proper software. I have already done some VHS to DVD conversion (using my PC and USB analogue/digital convertor) with the VS8 but it was very time consuming and I had cables running from room to room - not ideal with 2 1/2 year old twin boys tearing around. With the Sony DVD recorder it should be so much easier (VHS to DVD on the recorder then the DVD material edited on the PC).

I'll keep you informed how I get on.

Cheers,
Robert

Update......

I bought VideoStudio 10+. No problems with loss of Audio now. Took a bit of time to get started with it, but gradually figuring it out. Successfully created a DVD today from a VHS source recorded onto a Sony DVD recorder (with Dolby Digital Audio). The Forum helped me over a few early hurdles.

I see a lot of VS10+ posts with various problems so I'd imagine it will not all be plain sailing, but so far so good.

VS8 was good, but this is far ahead.

Thanks for all your help folks!

Cheers,
Robert

Hi Robert

Glad to hear you have had success.

Don’t take that as a bad sign, the forum is for helping ulead users.

The first time you visit is probably because you have a problem.

People without problems have no need to visit here.
Unless you are here to help, becoming one of the regular users.
Thanks to all that do contribute.

Robert you will be ok, but if you do need support you know where we are.

All the Best

Hello,

I'm new to this board and hoping that someone could help with my problem as follows:

I edited my home made movie using Ulead Videostudio 9.0. I transferred my movie from dvd-rw into pc. After the movie being imported, I found that there was no sound at all. I searched the computer and found the folder that kept the imported file. I tried to play with other player and it worked - no problem at all.

Anyone comes up with solution please reply. One more thing I just wondering the dolby digital 1 channel under Audio tab, shouldn't it be 2 channels?
