Everything looks good there, however are you capturing Lower Field First? Then are your project settings matching? Given what you have provided I'm leaning more towards a Field Order issue. If you have reversed your field order then you would get some of the problems you are experiencing.
Unless your video is recorded by your camcorder in 16bit then VS will capture it to 12bit.

Video Studio capture problems
When I changed the capture file setting from avi to mpeg it seems to be capturing correctly...I still would like to know why I can't capture with avi anymore...very strange....but at least if I capture with MPEG2 I'll be able to work on the wedding video I'm taping today...will capturing in mpeg cause any problems in the editing phase...or DVD burning later?
My processor is only 2.4g but my video memory is 256meg...just put in a new video card EVGA 6800 and I'm using 2 monitors...that wouldn't have anything to do with my problems would it?
Thanks for all your help so far!

What capture driver/plug in are you using, Ulead DirectShow Plug-in? For DV capture you should use that one.
I have a suggestion, try capturing using the free program WinDV, you can get here: http://windv.mourek.cz/. Some members including myself use it. You can capture DV-AV with firewire. It's a lightweight program that does a great job of capturing. See if you get the same problems.
You can edit MPEG-2, however members have reported problems when doing so. It is very crucial that your video and project properties match. This would alleviate re-encoding, which of course can lead to degradation and sync problems. Also make sure that Smart Render and Perform Non-square Pixel Rendering are not checked, if you are going to edit MPEG-2.

WinDV is really too easy, there's nothing in depth or fancy about the program. It does one thing and that is capture or actually transfers video data from the camcorder via firewire to your computer.
To use it simply go to the website (link provided above). Where you see the Screenshot mouse over it. You can click on the tabs, and also tool tips will pop up telling you about each control. The Discontinuity Threshold is similar to split by scene.
Were you able to capture anything at all with WinDV?

Yes I was able to capture with it, but when I play it back the video clip speeds up at the end of the clip.

I've never experienced a capture speeding up. You mentioned that you are using 2 monitors, and a new card. Have you checked to see if the drivers are up to date for the video card? Sometimes even though the card is new to you, there may have been updates issued in the meantime.
Also are you showing any drop-frames? Are you running any background apps? When capturing are you able to control your camcorder from within WinDV, VS or WMM? Capturing is done in real time so the camcorder would have to speed up, like clicking the fast-forward, unless this speed-up only happens to the clip after it has been captured, and not during.

Capture issues
I wish I could capture faithfully using VS10+, but I keep seeing frames dropped in the counter window. However, using WINDV, I never see even one frame dropped in WINDV counter dropped frames window. If there are any settings that could be optimized for capture in VS, I would love to hear about them so that I could keep everything under one roof so to speak.
