A new MS patch is out for audio playback problems in XP SP2.

I posted it here because we all work with audio, and this "sounds" important:

Install this audio component update to prevent memory corruption issues which may cause an unstable state on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2

BTW: I think you should check and adjust the audio mixer properties and levels after reboot. Your microphone might be enabled...
