Hi8 recorded on 8mm -- need help, desperate

Post by don_w »

Hello, I agreed to copy some Hi8 tapes to DVD for a friend of the family. I have a hi-tech Sony Hi8/8mm VCR to do this, and use Movie Factory.

My problem is this, the tape itself is an 8mm tape, but the recording on it is in Hi8 format. I know the tape cases are nearly identicatl, and I assume the camcorder did not check to be sure it was a Hi8 tape, and so recorded the wrong format onto the 8mm. Ny VCR checks the tape shell to see what kind of tape it is, and is reading this tape as 8mm, not Hi8. Because of this, I can not get the tape to play properly.

Can anyone tell me how to modify the tape shell so that it appears to the VCR as a Hi8 tape? or point me to a website?

I know a similar problem can occur with VHS and SVHS and you just have to modify the shell a little, but I can find no help with doing this for Hi8 recordings on 8mm.

I am desperate. Please help if you can.

Thanks !

Hi Don, and welcome to the forums..:)

I use a Sony Digital 8 camcorder, which can record/play Hi-8, 8mm, or Digital 8 formats. I also have a Sharp 8mm camcorder. While my Sony can play the tapes recorded on the Sharp, it's not reciprocated. I would think since your VCR (which the camcorders are when playing back tapes), is a Hi-8 then it should be able to playback an 8mm or Hi-8 tape. What it may not be able to playback is a Digital 8 tape. If the tape was recorded on a Digital-8 camcorder, then the only way I know of to play it back is with a digital-8 camcorder.

The reason I mention this, is that Hi-8 and 8mm are both analogue recording, and are recorded at the same speed. So there shouldn't be problems with a machine designed to playback and record both, to play either format. Digital-8 is recorded at a faster speed, thus making playback on older Hi-8 or 8mm machines impossible.

As far as the modifying the shell, are you intending on changing the container (shell) that the tape is enclosed in? If so I have to admit, I've never attempted or heard of anyone doing that, and I don't believe that will not have any affect on the content recorded on the tape. It all lies in the encoding.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8_mm_video_format Or do a google search for 8mm tape shell..

vidoman said it ..
your problem is not the case .
I do a bit of what you are doing and i use a stand alone dvd recorder with one of my 15 plus cameras to playback.
I have had tapes from a sony not play in a sony and so on.
in the rare occasion i have this problem i ask the client to let me use there recorder that they used to make the recording with.
last year i did about 300 transfers and there was only one that i remember that gave me problems.
it was a sony hi8 that was dropped and the heads must have been out cause it would play the tapes from it but not from other cameras.
the tapes from the dropped cam would not play in anything other than the dropped cam.
keep trying but i would not take apart the tape .
