PI11 mistakes

Post by artie7 »

Because of a software/dll conflict I used an system restore point of Windows XP.
Now I cannot start PhotoImpact11 anymore. PI searches for a work profile, does not find - and does not start.

I tried to deinstall - but there is not PI Deinstallation Option

Windows cannot deinstall because of failure code -5001, what said:
Please empty your temp files and try again.

But which temp files? I emptied windows/temp/ and deinstallation is still not possible.

No repair option with Installation CD. Only informed me, that PI is already installed. Actual Patch cannot be installed because it informed me that PI11 is not already installed?

hello?

Since PI11 with its different profiles I think PI become a terrible program
(version 6-XL all worked fine w/o problems, but 11 is terrible)

As long as ulead uses this profiles I will not buy any newer versions anymore.

Does anyone know a solution? Except try to find all ulead files and delete them manually.

Using system restore is asking for troubles, and you got them.

Try the following procedure:

Do a file search and find the *.xum profiles and delete the files, and then try to start PI.
There can be 5 files named:
Advanced.xum
Basic Photo.xum
Graphics.xum
Standard Photo.xum
Web.xum

These files are found in:
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11\Profiles

If that doesn’t work follow the URL.

Hello, thanks your try to help.

Bit it does not work.

I get a failure message: The ressource name was not found in the image file???

Whatever this should mean?

In this case a system restore was necessary, because most programs (incl. Ulead programs) can not be deinstalled in a very clean way.

I made the mistake to install first the JawsPDF Editor and made it the main program to open pdf files (because of the long time to open an Acrobat Reader 7 and following versions). Next I tried to install Adobe Acrobat Elements. This is the wrong way (you get a frozen system). So you have to do it the other way round, then this combination works. But as I did not believe, that just a deinstallation makes this problem clean, I used a restore point. Unfortunatey it seamed that I used PI11 in the meantime. And as PI11 is also not a systemfriendly program....I have this troubles.

But the pdf now works properly and all other programs too.

Now I try to deinstall by using your link, exept you have other ideas. In the profile direction I found excepted the xum files also an ini. Did I have to delete it too?

I think you have seriously corrupted your whole installation by not following well established procedures for installing/uninstalling programs. To top it all off, you have used a system restore in an attempt to fix problems. This only has made it worse.

System restore will only restore the registry to a previous state. It will not change any data files or remove installation files of programs installed after this particular restore point was created.

System restore is a great tool to solve a limited number of problems, if used with due dilligence. Used at will, without proper understanding on what has happened between the creation of the restore point and the actual time of deciding to go back in time, is begging for trouble.

As we all know, we don't have to beg Microsoft for trouble, it's already built into their software in generous amounts.

If I was you, I would wipe the lot, reformat the HDD that is, and start from the beginning.

If ever you attempt to fix a problem with system restore again, it's best practice to uninstall any software installed after the creation of the restore point in question, before you do a restore.

If the ini file is in the folder named Profiles, yes you can delete it.

To add to what Heinze states. Many people do not know that System Restore will only restore your Registry and a limited number of Operating System files, otherwise it does not replace deleted or in some cases changed files.

Hello Keenart and Xyzzi2 (or like that)

thanks a lot for your help.

The problem is solved this way.

I followed the Link to the description of sjj1805:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 5638#55638

I followed the first steps, but could still not execute step 3 ( means to deinstall PI11 by win ControlPanel).

So I jumped over step 3, and went on with step 4 manually. So I could continue til step 9, and all is now installed properly.
(step 3 I did between step 7 & 8, but there wont be much left, to deinstall).

Only thing... PI11 is so slowly while starting. O.k. it is just a laptop, so I have only a 64MB Gefoce Go 440, but we have to live with this.

I am still convinced that Ulead shoud also go back to the surface of PI10 wihtout the different work profiles.

To Heinz... I read some of your posts and know, that you are an experienced user. But after some years experience with XP I know about the risks of system restoring. Except of the Ulead problem, it was the right solution. now all programs work properly.
