Record Audio from CD-ROM or DVD movie

Post by blplhp »

Can VS10+ record streaming music from a CD-ROM or DVD movie disc? If so, how do I do it? There are some children's "tunes" that I would like to use as background music in my projects. If VS10+ cannot do this, what other alternative is there to get this music imported into VS10+?

Thanks,

While not technically streaming, VS will record audio files from a CD-ROM when you insert audio into the project from it. I believe you need the "Record directly from CD" set in your preferences to be able to do this.

So, if I want to record say, the "Thomas the Train" theme song from one of my son's CD-ROM interactive game discs or a DVD movie disc, I just insert the disc into my CD-ROM optical drive unit, then in VS10+ go to the Audio Step|Music & Voice tab, then click on "Import from Audio CD", and I should be able to record the theme song? I thought that the "Import from Audio CD" button was for recording individual audio files that appear one after another on an audio CD, and not for recording background music added to a CD-ROM or DVD movie. But this button also records from DVD discs as well? When in the "Import from Audio CD" dialog box (titled "Rip CD Audio"), will the theme song appear as an individual WAV file that I can click a "check" into a check box to have VS10+ import the audio clip?

Thanks,

It will only rip it if it is a separate file. If the audio is embedded within the video track then you have to use the import from DVD function in the Video Studio program group. Once the video is on your timeline you can separate the audio from it and save it in its own file.

Note: You may not be able to achieve this with copyright material.

The interactive CD ROM may have the sound stored in a special format that only plays with it's own software.

But, with audio recording software, you can make an analog recording of anything!!!! Here's a link that shows you how to record "What-U-Hear" using GoldWave. You should be able to do the same thing with Audacity (FREE!!!).

For DVD's, you can use the analog technique or search the Internet for a "DVD to WAVE" or "DVD to MP3" program. I don't have one of these programs, but they should work because (I think) the audio on DVDs is not encrypted. And, that means you are not doing anything illegal (in the USA) by "ripping" the audio from a DVD for personal use.

GuyL,

Thanks for your help. I assume that I can do this two ways. One is to go to the Capture step and then click on "Import from DVD/DVD-VR", select my drive in the dialog box that opens up and then click on Import. Or I can do it directly from the project's timeline by clicking on the "Insert Media Files" icon on the Toolbar, which brings up the same dialog box, then it will import the DVD video file directly onto my timeline. Then I can separate the audio track from the video track. Is this correct?

Thanks,

If those suggestions don't work you can always hook up your camera to your DVD player and record the part you want. Then transfer that to VideoStudio where you can either "Split Audio" or "Create Sound File". I had to do this once for a song I only had on cassette tape. Worked great. 8)

Edit: Of course, in this case it would only work if the music in question isn't being "talked over", but you get the idea.

Jeff,

Thanks for your back-up tip. It's funny that you mention a DVD player, because I am about to buy a new Yamaha DVD player tonight. I have never transferred DVD material to a camcorder before, so I assume that in order for my Sony DV camcorder to record from a DVD player, I would need to hook up a 4pin-4pin firewire cable between the DVD player and my camcorder. Play the DVD like normal, and press the record button on my camcorder. Is this about right?

Can't record that way - the DVD player won't put out a DV complient signal.

Alll you want is audio. Hook up the audio out jacks to the microphone in on the camera - or better yet, skip the camera and go directly to micropone in on the comuter and use audacity to record directly onto the computer.
