VS 9: I don't want the audio captured from my video camera

Post by genefalk »

I am using the DV to USB connection and I want to capture only the video.

Can I do that, if so, how do I do that?

Under Options, I picked DV Type 2 hoping that it woud put the audio in the audio track so I could delete it, but it did not.

The camera is a SONY DCR TRV510, SONY tells me that I can't shut the audio off at the camera

Hi

You cannot capture the video separate to the audio. This is not a problem.

Once you have captured your footage, From the edit timeline hit the ‘Mute Audio’ button.

VS 9: I don't want the audio captured from my video camera

Hi genefalk,

My comment below is based on using VS10+, as I have never used VS9, but it should be the same.

Just to clarify one point Trevor made, I believe you will need to click the "Mute" icon button that appears in the "Video" tab of the Video Options Panel for EACH individual video clip in the Video Track. I don't believe there is a mute button when viewing in the "Project" mode that will globally mute all video tracks in your project at one time. If there is, I would like to know as well. I believe you have to be in the "Clip" mode, which will display the "Video" tab of the Video Options Control Panel. If I'm wrong on this, Trevor can correct me.

Cheers,

Hi Bryan P

Yes, you are correct.

I assumed the OP was capturing one file and not using Split By Scene.

The mute is only available from the 'Clip' view.

The other option is to capture the video+audio, then in the timeline, split the audio from the video and delete it. In VS9, with the video in the timeline and the program in Edit mode, about a third the way down the left hand side of screen is a button 'Split Audio'. Click it and the audio track will appear in the voice track below. Simply delete this if you are sure you will never need it again.

As a footnote, DV Type 2 Encoder records the video and audio in separate streams BUT within a single video file. Type 1 records only one video+audio stream.

Hi Ken

Afaik splitting the audio and deleting the sound file has the same effect as muting the audio from the video clip.

If after splitting the audio/deleting. By unchecking the mute you will be back to the original video clip.

That's why I both posed it only as an option (to muting) and added the warning words about being completely sure you will never need the audio track again!!

Hi Ken

Once you have deleted the audio track, you un-mute the main video track, then split audio again.

You never loose the audio unless you render it out.

I don't think I follow ... When I split the audio, then delete the audio track, it is gone. I have not muted the video/audio track... :?: :?:

Hi Ken
Sorry for the delay in replying.

When I Split Audio

1 / The Video Clip is automatically Muted by Video Studio.

2 / The split audio clip is placed in the Voice Track.

3 / The Split Audio is Deleted/ Removed from the Voice Track (by me)

4 / This leaves me with the Video Clip which is muted. The mute button showing yellow with a cross mark.

5 / I click the mute button to return to the normal video clip. With sound.
I can play the video clip and here the audio. I am back with the original clip.

I can repeat this process as many times as I like, just going round in circles.

Are you saying you cannot retrieve the audio after splitting and deleting the voice track.?

Pity they don't have an emoticon for someone slapping their forehead after realisation hits! So I will use this one instead:

Thanks for taking the time to explain, Trevor. And I can't even claim it was a senior's moment... I have simply never noticed that VS automatically mutes the original file when I use split audio. I have assumed for all these years that when I deleted the separated audio file that the audio had gone forever! But I have just tested and realised that you are absolutely correct.

But on the up-side, this is one of the reasons I like this forum so much. Even us old timers can still learn new things about the program all the time!
