True for other programs, but in the world of Ulead, it means "Ulead Private Data" file. This file is created with a rendered video file of the same name. It contains the full path of the location of the video file and supposedly some scene information of the rendered video.

So It´s necessary to keep it?
I thought all data about the video was exclusively saved in the videostudio project.

I have never know what they were for, and have usually deleted them. This has not in any way affected their playability either within VS or in other software, much less the ability to burn them to disc.

upd file holds the data about the file status for smart rendering.
As long as the upd file is there you can use pre-rendered quality playback with the next session.
If you delete it it will re-pre-render the project.
When you are finished with MPG encoding you may delete the file.

Could also be Utah Police Department

(And the OPD sign on Macca's costume on Sergeant Pepper means Officially Pronounced Dead. That's yet another evidence!)

no no lance, these are pictures of the look-alike they hired after his death.

(is it me or are we off-topic and non-Ulead here? My mistake)

You mean after I have created my mpeg or mpeg2 file (etc) and finally, it´s my definitive file, I can delete it?

Yes, it's only needed as long as you want to edit your project.
After that this very small file (1K I think) is useless.

But obviously Ulead can't know when you're done so they never delete the files.

Daniel,
Where did you get the info that UPD files contain info for smart render? Or is that a joke?

BTW, I have always deleted UPD files because they clutter up my folders. When I smart render, I can see that it is functioning properly...

John -- that was exactly my experience too. And I also distinctly recall using Smart Render (those were the days!) with no problems after I had deleted them...

This of Off Topic but I wonder if the user from Germany could read any of the Babblefish translation of the RP??? I hope it was better than the English translation of his query... :D

I didn't get that info anywhere, it's just what I experienced on my machine in V9/VS10. Don't mix Smart Render and preview render though.

If I keep the upd, then preview is immediate, if I remove them (what I usually did because even if very small they clutter the folder listing) then re-rendering started.
I thought it was a link between the VSP and the ~hr* files for preview. Since I never use Quality Playback any more it's getting old now, and if you have other info then it's been a coincidence. Or a plain mistake.

Anyway it was not a joke. I do joke, but I try to make it obvious then...
