VS 9 crashing when trying to change preferences

hi there

i had vs 9 installed for a while and everything worked fine. now when i try to go into "file- preferences" instead of opening preferences, a message comes up "video studio 9 has encoutered a problem and needs to shut down". so i reinstalled vs9, same problem. to test i installed it on another computer (amd2600 64bit, 512 ram), same problem. i am puzzled that this seems to occur now out of the blue, after working fine for a long time. would be grateful for any suggestions.

There was a problem with VS 9 and Windows Installer.

Not sure if this is directly related but will be worth looking at

many thanks for the info, trevor, much appreciated. in the meantime, i bought vs10, that solved my issue.
