Import DVD: Cannot open files. Report ID: 0x80040836 (2102)

Post by Bombadil »

I have a problem I was hoping a Ulead technical support person could help me with. I downloaded and installed the trial version of Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus on my junk computer. It works flawlessly and can import the DVD's I copied to a mapped drive letter. Impressed with the product I then paid for the full version. Upon installing it on my main computer I find I can no longer import the same DVD's from folder. In essence here is what I'm doing:

Capture --> Import from DVD/DVD-VR --> Import DVD Folder --> Browse to folder.

This also works perfectly as it parses the DVD content and shows me the various Titles and Chapters within the DVD. I can even preview and watch them at this point. However, when I select any chapter and then click Import I get the following error:

Import DVD
Cannot open files.
Report ID: 0x80040836 (2102)

Help from anyone would be appreciated.

Not sure what to suggest. I follow almost exactly the same steps and have never had a problem. The only difference is that I never choose ' Import DVD Folder' but only the middle 'Import' Button.

I assume when you say you select the Chapter, that you mean you put a check in the box to the left of the Chapter?

That is correct. I put a checkmark next to a chapter before clicking Import. In my case I've copied the DVD to my hard disk so I need to use the DVD From Folder button to access the source.

Did you install the full version from an installation CD, from a downloaded full version or did you purchase an "unlock" key?
Did you fully uninstall the trial version first or install over the top of the trial?

I fully uninstalled the trial version and then installed the downloaded full version using the key provided to me through the on-line process.

My suspicioun is a previous MPEG-4 codec being used as the default MPEG-4 codec for Ulead. I had previously installed the Xvid MPEG-4 codec as well as a variety of other DVD manipulation software. I believe I successfully uninstalled these other codecs but my problem still remains.

It seems that this error code is rather poorly generated as it doesn't offer any real advice on the nature of the problem. I'd still like a resolution to this problem other than reinstalling my operating system.

Any other thoughts??

You mention a possible problem because of MPEG4 but the DVD will use MPEG2 files. Is there anything unusual about the DVD?
Also, try Imorting from the DVD directly from the disc to see if that works or even try re-copying the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive again in case there was some corruption the first time you copied.

It's my general lack of understanding about the codecs which made me suspect the MPEG4 codec.

These video files reside on my network server. The folder with the video files is on a mapped drive letter. The drive letter and security are the same for my fast notebook with the licensed version as well as my slow desktop with the evaluation version. However, the evaluation version can import these files.

I've tried copying the files from the network drive to my local drive but I get the same error.

This seems to be a failure within the import engine only on my notebook. I was guessing that the codec was to blame since the preview works but the import fails. It's during that delicate process of reading and recreating the video stream that things seem to go wrong.

I copied the files from the network to my local drive using the regular Windows Explorer.

I really doubt it's a file corruption issue since I can walk back and forth between the two PCs and see one work and then the other does not.

Some third party DLL or plug-in is seems to be interfereing with a normal installation of VideoStudio.

Yes probably, I really can think of nothing else here as it is getting out of my depth. The only other alternative would be the old reliable re-install and see how that goes. Maybe try a "clean" reinstall. Search it on hte board and you will find instructions for how to do that.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Maddrummer3301 nailed the problem.

It had nothing to do with the download though. Obviously there would be extraction or CRC errors during the initial execution that would have been caught.

However, the working folder *WAS* the problem. Mine was a UNC path rather than a regular drive letter. I even know how this happened so will document it for others.

In my environment I use a Windows 2003 Small Business Server and use the My Documents redirection feature. This changes the actual location of the My Documents folder to a UNC path pointing to my user folder on the server.

Ulead's software didn't expect a UNC path to be returned by the operating system when asking for a sub-folder within the My Documents folder to become the "Working Folder".

Problem solved.

Thanks everyone!
