Just installed Movie Factory 5

Post by AMD64only »

....after being quite quite happy with MF 2 !

First problem hits me in the face :
To create a normal DVD from 5 Film-files, total of 3.6 GB, MF5 tells me I need 12 GB of disk space.
Using MF2, I only needed 6-7GB !

I've looked all the various options to see if there is something I don't know that might be causing this bloating of my disk space.

If I can't find a solution, I will deinstall and go back to MF2 !
Or can anyone help please ?

PS:
I'm generally against this type of bloating !
12GB means that the software is probably going to need twice as much time as MF2 to do what is in my opinion a simple job.

The MF5 disc template you're using has the same (or very similar) settings for resolution and bit rate as MF2?

The "PLEASE READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING!!!" also says to mention the properties of your source files.
Maybe if someone guesses the format of the "film-files", they can give you a tip :D

Sorry .. you're quite right of course !
I used exactly the same file-types for MF2 as in MF5 !

VIDEO
Res : 720x576
FPS : 25
Bitrate: 14648 Kbps
Quality : 1.45 b/ps
Codec: MPEG2

AUDIO
2 channel
Sample rate : 48000 Hz
Bitrate : 112 Kbps

The example I quoted was as follows :

5 MPGE2 files as shown above - file size in total ca. 3.6 GB.

On the old MF2, this normally required ca. 6GB of free disk space for temporary files etc.
The new MF5 tells me I need 12-13 GB of temporary space.

Hi,
well, something is wrong.
Bitrate: 14648 Kbps
The video is already beyond the DVD specification of 10080 (total of all streams after muxing).

This might not help you, but...
If you use MPEG2 files that are already DVD compliant for your chosen project type, and you don't edit them in MF, you should check the option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files". Then MF will just mux the VOB files without re-encoding for ages.

Thanks Henry, I'll check it out!

It was already checked !
Same situation - 13GB temporary disk space needed - instead of ca. 6GB under MF2 !

You never answer the first question when I pose 2 :!:

How about confirming the disc template and project settings (DVD, PAL, 4:3 or 16:9 resolution, bitrate, ...) and where the much-too-high-for-DVD bitrate came from.

It sounds to me like MF5 is smart enough to realize that your material is not compliant and will render again, thereby requiring double the space.

Or maybe MF5 is lying. How much space does it really take? Does it render all the clips again even though they are MPEG2 already?

Here is the format of the first file - 5 in total - all same format.

FILE
Format : MPEG-2
Filesize : 851428 KB
Length : 2582 seconds

VIDEO
Videotype : MPEG-2 Video, upper half picture first
Total frames : 64572
Attribute : 24 bits, 720x576, 4:3
Rate : 25 Frames/Sec.
Datarate : Variable Bitrate ( Max. 4300 Kbps )

AUDIO
Type : MPEG-Audiolevel 2 files
Abtastungen : 124978240
Attribute : 48000 Hz, 16 bit stero
Levels : 2
Bitrate : 192 Kbps

Those were the values that MF5 shows me.
The source was simply a DVB-T recodring from TV !

[Also, at that low a bit-rate their isn't any quality.

Just a guess buy MovieFactory 2 was probably adjusting the Project Properties to match the source files properties as close as possible.

I've got it temp file size down to 8GB using "Constant" 1777 Bitrate ( the lowest ). I'll spend a bit more time experimenting before actually burning the DVD.

Thanks again for your kind help.

End of story .. I'm so far happy now with MF5.

MF5 works fine as far as I can tell!
