Getting Artifacts and black screens in Slide show with vs10+
Have been doing slide shows on VS10+ since May... only this last show came up with artifacts and a black screen in the middle. I had been using lower field first because I had been doing video. After reading the tutorials and checking out some of the suggested links I realized that I should be doing my slide shows in framed based. I made them into ISo files for burning but can't think of anything else I did differently. except that the JPeg image files were on a external hard drive(firewire). I actually scanned the images on a different computer. The thumbnail images and my preview of the images on the computer I used to create the show and burn the disks didn't show any problem with the images and they looked fine in the ulead timeline. I didn't make a dvd file since hadn't had problems with the single layer dvd's. Any ideas why this may be happening?
Thank you
Thank you

Hi
(field order or frame base.)
I always use Lower Field for all my video. My main source is a digital camera and therefore ‘Lower’
Ultimately your slide show will be made into a video to be viewed on TV and as such should have a field order.
If the target viewer is the pc or internet then go for ‘Frame Based’
Have you changed the size of your images?
What are the size of your images.?
Keep them to the aspect ratio 4:3 if that’s what you are using.
You said (I didn't make a dvd file since hadn't had problems with the single layer dvd's. Any ideas why this may be happening?)
Does this mean you rendered in the burner stage. Some users have problems when rendering within the burner module.
Make a Dvd file first (Share Create Video File)
Now you can play the completed video on your pc prior to burning.

My main source is not a digital camera. They are old analog slides that have been scanned on a Nikon 5000Ed scanner into Jpeg very high quality files. So what you are saying is that I should be still usung the lower field first setting even with the stills? Interesting but when I went to view it on the computer some of the artifacts were not there. It was only when viewed on the TV via a DVD player.

Make a Dvd file first (Share Create Video File) (do not use smart render)
Now you can play the completed video on your pc prior to burning.
Use this new file to burn your dvd

I go to share then I make an ISO file from which I burn. I found the black screen broblem...
I had a fade to black instead of cross fade transition in there.... don't know how that happened.
What I take you are saying is that I should make a dvd file first preview it them take the dvd file and make an ISO file from which to burn it?

If the black screen was just the ‘fade to black’ transition then that’s fine. Glad there was no problem.
Made me laugh anyway.
At the top of this forum there is a recommended procedure, covers a work flow that is tried and tested to produce good results.
Also have a read at my quick guides from the link below.
All the best Trevor
Field order
Now I am getting confused. I had posted a question similar in content relating to slide show field order some time ago. I am using slides/photos exclusively and following proper sticky procedure. If I remember correctly Ken Berry answered saying to use frame based. I have used Video Studio 9 for 8 months now and this is the only remaining topic that I am still unsure about.
In the future, now that I have a DV camcorder, I will be mixing in some DV/AVI files along with photos for ultimately viewing on TV on the same DVD. So which is the proper way to go???

Depends on the version of VideoStudio.
In VS-9 and before you can export mixed video/image content to frame mode and most DVD players will handle it just fine, generating the extra field on the fly.
In VS-10 you have the option of applying an anti-flicker filter to images only (setup is in Preferences), which creates a second field for them so they display properly in projects exported in field mode.

Thanks Terry
Its interesting that VS 10 has included the anti flicker filter within its preferences.
VS 9 had a filter as part of the burn module I assume to limit flicker within any menu images.
I am under the opinion that when creating a slide show, ultimately I am making a video.
This video will be viewed on TV just like any other video, and as such should have a field order.
My option to choose lower field is match any other video I may use, which is from a digital source.
Irrespective of the anti flicker filter
Assuming we are making a slide show containing just images, no other video content, should we use ‘field order or frame based?
When applying the Pan & Zoom effect the images are no longer still.
Again I am making a video to view on TV and as such should use field order.
Just my opinion

If you were feeding the video content straight from a computer TV out to the TV set then yes, field would rule the day. The difference is that DVD can be either field or frame, and frame is the same as progressive scan.
The uppance is that DVD players take that frame (progressive) DVD you created and generate its own 2nd set of fields for display, giving the TV both fields it requires. There are differing methods to do this depending on the player, but in the end the TV gets what it needs.
BTW: a large number of the DVD's these days are rendered to 24 fps progressive scan (frame; aka: "DVD Film") because that's how many frames/sec a film camera shoots. The player again does the conversion required to play them on 29.970 fps interlaced field TV's.

I am certainly no expert of fields or frames - all I know is when I include stills in my video I use Lower Field First. So when I did a complete slide show (no video) I again used LFF and it played perfectly from a DVD player and computer. Good enough for me.
