MF5: This program is a piece of s***!

Post by progrocktv »

Constantly crashes. Spent 2 hours on a project only for it to crash. Tried it on FIVE different systems! Won't even SAVE a project properly! NO customer support, no fixes!

WHY?????

Depends.

If you haven't optimized your system for video then 512mb of RAM can be an issue. With a lot of background tasks running the system will hit the swapfile heavily, and if the boot partition runs low on space for it most video programs will crash with memory errors...as in lack of virtual memory (the swapfile or space for same).

How to set up an 'editing profile' is covered in this Tutorial;

Only said it crashes does not help. Can you list the crash message and the steps you do in DVDMF before it crashes?

Also the properties of the source files are very important.

From your other thread:
I still can't save projects properly, the menu transitions don't work and it still crashes
The first 2 are known problems and have already been discussed here in depth.

1. There is a hotfix for project saving available from support, but no official patch is offered. Search for umfnormaledittask for concise results.

2. Some (not all) menu transitions are broken. The ones I know of repeat the first part ("menu-out") instead of doing "clip-in".

Aside from the 4GB issue mentioned, there are (more important for me) encoding issues. The menus are always progressive, and advanced options that would allow the desired settings do not work. Activating the advanced options actually breaks VBR encoding (a low bitrate used, and other options ignored).

3. As far as crashing goes, I've seen MF5 crash when loading a previous project, or more exactly: it stopped responding completely. The next attempt worked. This only happened a couple of times. I assume this is due to the hotfix not completely fixing the issue of project saving.

So I'm waiting for the fixes before $.

But MF5 is surely not a piece of s***, it just needs some important fixes.

Yea I read about that. I've e-mailed tech support to get the hotfix and still haven't heard back (I'm my 4th e-mail to them without a response) Is there a link where I could download it from?

Thanks!

There are many reasons a program can crash, especially in video / DVD programs. Maybe you can let us know what's going on with your DVDMF and let us try to help you.

I would not say Ulead is good enough, but if you compare with other products on the market from other companies, I would say it's not that bad.

Can you tell us how many video/audio codec packs you have installed in your system?

When it get crashed what message is shown on the screen?

What is the properties of the source files you use in the DVDMF project?

Can you tell us the steps you do to cause the crash?

Please follow the procedures listed in http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8960 to post your questions.

I think these would help much than just screamming loud here.

Sincerely,
H.T.

One cause of crashes can be the C: drive running out of space due to a bloating swapfle, temp files and the working folder; basically the program experiences an out of memory error, as in virtual memory (the swapfile).

Moving all temps, the working folder etc. off to another drive with its own Projects and TEMP folders does the trick.

Ulead products are not the only ones that suffer this problem. Most all editors work much better when you offload things to a 'video drive'.

Well, they can't be tooooo afraid of your kind of truth, because they left your s**t standing here. The two of you should open your own forums, I'm sure you could offer each other a lot of support.

Dreamworks,

Nobody is stopping you from telling "the truth". Maybe you were ranting, using foul language, or just "bashing" Movie Factory without giving any helpful advice... You are free to share your experiences and your advice, and even your frustratiion... if you do it in a respectful manner. Nobody is going to prevent you from recommending a better program for editing DivX... I often recommend a different program for editing MPEG-2 files!

We are not Ulead employees here. The forum is provided by Ulead, but the moderators are just Ulead users. We are here to help each other, and this isn't the place to "send a message" to Ulead. We know that these programs are not perfect, but plenty of us are making really good DVDs with Ulead programs. For others, Ulead may not be the answer. I often use several different programs on a project, although it's always Ulead for authoring & burning DVDs (usually DVD Workshop).

Doug.

I've e-mailed tech support to get the hotfix and still haven't heard back (I'm my 4th e-mail to them without a response)
FYI- If you have the trial version (or an SE version that came free with your hardware), I don't think you get tech support.

Ulead won't answer here. Some members here may be be Ulead employees, but if so I don't know who they are. (The moderators are not Ulead employees.)
