Auto Save

Post by Rich2Putt »

My auto save is set to save every 2 minutes.

Last night I worked on a project & I use (ctrl+s) frequently. After 3 hrs into the project, VS10 disappears off the the desk top with no warnings.

I restarted VS10 an a message asked if I wanted to save the previous work & I checked "yes". About half of my project was missing (15mins).

Don't understand why the auto save didn't at least keep up to the last 2 mins of my work.

My guess would be that the 'auto save' function isn't working and the only saves were as a result of your Ctrl+S.

That's my guess also. Hopefully it was a one time fluke.

As I understand it, the problem probably lies in the fact that auto-save creates its own back-up file, while your own saves of course save your project file. When a crash occurs, I think it is better not to accept the program's offer to restore, since it will restore your project file as last saved manually by you. Otherwise, it will restore its auto-save file, which might take you to a more recent point. I recall someone mentioning where you could find the auto-save file and what sort of extension it has, but I am afraid I cannot find it for the moment. Maybe someone else will know...

That would explain why when a crash occurs & asks if you accept to restore, it will ask you for a file name the first time you save it as a project.

I would hope the automatic auto save file goes to a tempoary file.

If I'm not mistaken, for auto save to work properly, you also need to save your project with a unique name at least once.

Personally, I don't use the auto save function at all. It's causing more grief than it does good on many a system. I rather save frequently with alternating names. Even a fatal crash will not lose me much.
