MSP8 Field display

Post by Gorf »

Is it possible to turn off the "feature" where the two interlaced fields are blurred together on the preview window?

I'm not sure, but I think the Preview Window uses only a single field if it is 352 x 288 or less.

Thanks, Brian. It's a DV project with DV footage, so it's all 720x576 (the preview window itself is showing at 768x576, though). When you hold the mouse down when "scrubbing", the fields appear. As soon as you let go of the mouse, or single-step through the frames, all the fields blur together.

I don't think you can turn off that "feature"

Out of curiosity, what are you wanting to do with the fields displayed :?:

I tend not to start/stop the camera when working, which means that I have to do my cuts during editing. I do it on the assumption that it's better for the camera and tape if you leave the motors running.

When I get to the edit, I find the first frame that the subject is in focus, and the camera not moving, then step through about 5-10 seconds of film to find the first frame with interlace "combs". I then place a cut on that frame and I've got my clip.

Without the combing, it's harder to see the first frame where the camera moves to hunt for its next victim.

The way I see it, it's something that can be overcome by using a different method while filming (such as doing more work on-camera), but not only does that defeat the object of using editing software, it doesn't help me with the hundred or so tapes I still have to edit using shooting methods developed with MSP6 and MSP7...

That's very interesting. I'm on the exact other end of the spectrum when taping high school footbal games. I use start/stop all the time for each play. Then when I open them up in MSP, I use the "Scenes" option to automatically insert them as separate clips on the timeline.

I'm assuming you capture as one long video clip to hard drive. Then go into your edit routine.

Have you tried the Multi-Trim option? It might make the selection of your small clips a little faster -- you can use the mouse scroll wheel since it's only a few seconds at a time (I'm not sure, you would have to try it to see if it works for your situation).

As you suggested, you could always use MSP 7.x to grab your clips, then use Smart Trim to output them to a separate folder for editing in MSP8.

Thanks, George - I'll give it a try today and let you know how I get on. I haven't tried multi-trim yet,

There is a MSP8 feature I'd forgotten about - the ability to scissor clips at the preview bar location. That is a cool one for us Contour Shuttle jog users, so there's hope for MSP yet.

For what it's worth, I'd also be interested in having this "feature" be something that can be deactivated.
After working with combed interlaced for so many years, this new format just looks blurry to me all the time. I totally understand the motivation to implement this deinterlaced display ... many many of the questions coming from new users were regarding the combed display they were seeing for the first time, but I would really prefer the ability to turn this off.
