Photoshop Veteran Just DL PI and Cant find how to save alpha

Post by roseenglish »

Hi.

I DL PI and must say Im picking a lot of it up pretty quick, partly because the userface isnt that disimilar to PS.
Now then, I have some free objects I found on a 3rd party website ( I must say it seems creating 3D objects in PI seems very good never seen such profesional objects for paint progrrams before)
Feathers is my object but all I can do is save it to white ( dispite making a new transparent image )
I cant work out how to find what would be ' alpha channels' in PS.

HOw do I save a ready made object or indeed a newly created object/image with a transparent background on TGA?

Also... I see things like Presets for download. Are they what PS refers to as Patterns? Just fillers? Or are they like presets you would find is say Texture Maker ( a program I simply cannot grasp way too many options on that interface which is a shame- I use Wood Worker by the same Co with ease and my job involves making game textures ) So Im curious.

How does PI compare to PS regards to making 'from scratch' brick walls for example?

I normally work with photographs and cut, clean, layer, blend etc to make my game textures. But lack the experience or program to make my own brand new textures. I use lots of plug ins for PS liek Eye Candy Textures which are pretty neat but a little limiting.

ANy advise would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are a plug-in “junkie” you might be interested in the following:

PI has a great deal to offer but is not like PS. You really need to drill down into the Interface if you are going to create textures and learn how the various components work to get the full advantage of this program.

Presets are like unalterable actions or scripts, a combination of effects, filters and much more. You can create your own when necessary. Go to Effects, then Brick tiles, you have to understand how to use the interface to create your own brick walls, or import a source file from a photo.

Study the Mask Tool, Layer Manager, Effects, and the EasyPalette. These features are the most important used to create textures. You may find Tutorials a good source of learning to get the basics down.

PI does not treat Layers or Alpha Channels the same, as does PS. In PI, you work with objects and Masks. You can create Masks, save the grayscale or black and white to file and then reload when required.

You can open a New File with transparent background. AS far as TGA goes, several years ago many Graphic Editors, including PS, stopped supporting the fully transparent background. Now most save a TGA with translucent white background. This is a major source of aggravation if you want to create dark textures, because if you tile your textures you often get white pixels combined with the texture due to anti-aliasing. If possible GIF still retains a fully transparent background as an image. You can control the Opacity of an object and create Masks using the Tool Palette, Tool Options, and in the Layer Manager.

Texture Maker is one of two of the most affordable and best Texture programs on the market.

Thankyou for your reply!

Yes I agree TM 'is' fantastic I can see the potential of having Presets etc and the options are amazing.
My problem is ( and it is mine) Im a stickler for trying something new.
I start off learning something and im almost afraid to learn anything new.
I feel PS is so huge and ive only just started to scratch the surface with it.
Im a sloooow learner which adds to the 'sticking to what I know' factor.

I'll def keep it as I did TM and maybe in a year or so take the time required to learn them.

Many Thanks.... I guess I was hoping for a UFO to TGA converter LOL

The only other graphic editor that I use frequently, which can work with channels, alphas, and TGA is Corel Photo-Paint. There are a few restrictions about the Bit type of Masks that you can include in the final Save.
