VS10 - PAL to NTSC, chapter problems

Post by cbroude »

I've captured video in PAL and then go to the SHARE step and define the system to be NTSC. I have set up a lot of chapters, not in one session i.e. closing the "add chapters" window without burning, the project gets saved, exiting VS with "save project", and restarting the project at a later time.

Whenever I do this, the chapter marks are in the wrong place - I believe that the programme isn't converting from PAL to NTSC. If I go to the EDIT step and e.g. add or remove a filter from the first clip and then go to "create DVD", then the chapters are in the right places, but the latest development is that any new chapters I add have disappeared after exiting and restarting the programme.

Can anyone tell me whats going on? :?

Part of the reason for that would be that in order to do the conversion from PAL to NTSC VS has to "create" 4.97 frames of video for each second. The only way it can do that is to repeat existing frames and remember those are incomplete frames at that because of the interlacing. That would most likely mess up the chapter points.

The only solution I can think of is to create an NTSC video file first then re-mark you chapter points.

You need to understand that converting from one TV system to another is something that VS and most other edting software is not designed to do. It is actually a process in itself especially if you want good smooth results.
There is a little data on it here:

Thanks - what I see is that it's almost as if UVS10+ is keeping two project files because:

I've got 65 chapters successfully set by using the method I described, and I'm near the end of a very long project. Then I add another one in the NTSC version i.e. when I see all the chapters in the right places and exit. When I restart, in the NTSC version I have lost the 66th chapter, but its in the PAL version, although its off the end of the project i.e. beyond all clips because its not padded.

Obviously I'm trying to avoid having to redo all of these chapters using the method in the tutorial.

I personally don't really have the knowledge or experience to give you an answering regarding setting chapter points in this situation. Hopefully someone else will get on and bail you out! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Good luck!
