Problem with Farsi Subtitles! NEED CS ID SUPPORT

Post by Prema »

We are currently translating a project for a health organisation in many langueages. We started the work with DVD Workshop 2, so all our subtitle formats are for that software.
We are now running into problems, while trying to add the FARSI (Iranian language) subs. Our file is in unicode and Farsi is not listed in the unicode list for the Workshop...also farsi fonts are not working in the workshop.
The whole project is for a good cause and has to be completed asap!

Any help is highly apreciated

Thank you very much in advance :-)

Farsi is not in the list of languages supported by my version of XP and I think that may be where your problem lies.

It may be that you can work with a 3rd party subtitle software that you can then import into WS2. Have you tried Googling 'subtitle software'? The Uru Subtitle Workshop claims to handle Farsi (http://www.urusoft.net/downloads.php?cat=langssw&lang=1) and can export to WS2 (Not tried it, though!!!)

Farsi has to be installed manually into XP from the XP Disc.

Everything is allready in the DVDWorkshop format, so no need for the subtitle workshop to convert. Also the Farsi file you linked to is only a text file for the gui and not for the subtitles and no unicode support from the subtitle Workshop.

BTW: How do i get a unicode formated file into a "normal" text file?

The Problem is that there is no Farsi support from Ulead yet:
Sorry for the inconvenience. DVD Workshop 2.2 or later versions support Unicode for subtitles, so it's necessary to input the correct CS ID in the subtitle attribute to display other translated languages correctly after they have been imported. You may refer to the procedure below:
Export the TXT file after you finish one language subtitle in DVD Workshop 2.
Open the exported TXT file and paste the translated characters to replace the original ones.
Locate the last section with the #Subtitle text attribute begin and #Subtitle text attribute end.
Between the #Subtitle text attribute begin and end, there are three settings which you will need to be aware of:
(1) /FN: means font name. Please check the font type list in DVD Workshop 2 and fill out the font name you need. For example, Arial.
(2) /CS: means character set. Please enter the appropriate code in the ID (CS) field which stands for different languages from the following table. For example, to create Hebrew subtitles, you need to change the CS ID to 177.
(3) /FS: means font size. This defines the font size you need. For example, 30.
After you replace the translated characters and change the proper settings for FN, CS and FS, save as the TXT file to the other file name.
Import the saved as file to DVD Workshop 2 to complete other language subtitle editing.
Definition ID (CS) Description
ANSI_CHARSET 0 West Europe
SHIFTJIS_CHARSET 128 Japanese
HANGEUL_CHARSET 129 West Europe
JOHAB_CHARSET 130 Korean
GB2312_CHARSET 134 Simplified Chinese
CHINESEBIG5_CHARSET 136 Traditional Chinese
HEBREW_CHARSET 177 Hebrew
ARABIC_CHARSET 178 Arabic
GREEK_CHARSET 161 Greek
TURKISH_CHARSET 162 Turkish
VIETNAMESE_CHARSET 163 Vietnamese
THAI_CHARSET 222 Thai
EASTEUROPE_CHARSET 238 East Europe
RUSSIAN_CHARSET 204 Russian
BALTIC_CHARSET 186 Baltic
DEFAULT_CHARSET 1 Default
SYMBOL_CHARSET 2 Symbol
SYMBOL_CHARSET 3 Symbol
Hey Ulead any chance to get Farsi support? Otherwise we have to shift over the whole project to an other software, which is a heck of work.

We found out, that a combination of the CS ID for Arabic (178) and the use of a Farsi Font seems to display Persian subtitles properly!

Problem hopefully solved :D
