Reducing Video Data Bitrate

Post by DGV »

Howdy,

I have just captured 2 hours of sub-VHS-quality footage from a MiniDV tape into VS9. I went to burn it to disc last night, letting it render and burn overnight, and as the project size was larger than the capacity of the DVD-R, I selected the Fit and Burn option. When it went to burn, it said the disc was too small and use a larger capacity disc.

As the quality is not great, I was wondering if there is a way to reduce the data rate to, say 4000kpbs - which should then fit 2 hours onto a DVD, even after I have already captured the footage from MiniDV?

I am guessing it is a setting in there somewhere, but I just cant seem to locate exactly where I can change it.

Thanks guys.

When you go to the burning module (Share > Create Disc > DVD), click on the middle icon of the three down in the bottom left of the burning screen. Then click on the button 'Change MPEG settings'. Then select 'Customise' and on the Compression page which appears, you will see that you can change the bitrate at which that disc will burn.

Hello Dain

You do not say what your capture settings were.
You indicate that you burned your video from the project file rather than from a mpeg file.
This may cause problems.

The quality problem most likely is due to wrong settings from the capture stage or the work flow you are using.

How did you connect your VHS to Mini Dv????????

If you used Pass –Through then you would be connected to the pc via firewire.
Is this the case?

Ok assuming you are capturing to Mpeg you should select DVD as the capture ‘Format’
Click the ‘Options’ cogwheel and select ‘Property settings’ select ‘Advanced’ change the bit-rate to 4000.
You can redefine the other options, audio to Digital Dolby etc.

I would use

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Upper Field First (this depends on the type of capture device, Digital or Analogue)
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 4000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48.0 KHz, Stereo

Using 4000 kbps will allow 2 hours to fit a dvd. (under 4.3 Gb)

I assume you have little or no editing to do, other than trim the ends of the video. Otherwise capture to DV-Avi.

When you have completed the editing
Share-Create-Video File same as first clip.
This will create a new Mpeg file of your project.
Use this file to burn a dvd
