Hi all! I'm new to VideoStudio. I created a movie without any problems. However, now I want to burn a DVD. When I go to the "Share" tab and try to insert chapters... it shuts down Windows XP completely. I've never had that happen...ever! Now it's happened twice... both times while using VideoStudio 9. I have a gig of Ram and plenty of hard drive space. So I'm not sure why this is happening. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

VideoStudio 9 crashing my system
Moderator: Ken Berry
Hi Julie,
The two obvious culprits here would be Windows programs running in the background conflicting and causing a crash, or you need to update your video drivers. Bad RAM could also cause this, but that's not as likely as the above. Shut down all unnecessary background programs, including screensaver, ant virus scan, spam blocker etc and try again. If you are successful, you might want to set up a video editing profile on your computer where only the necessary programs are enabled. If you are unsuccessful, look to update your video drivers.

All of my crashes (and "lip-sync" problems) have been caused by bad video files. In my case they were MPEGs. (The corrupt MPEGs played-back OK, but caused problems when I tried to make DVDs.)
What format are your video files? AVI/DV causes the least trouble. Highly compressed formats like DivX and Xvid cause the most trouble. My MPEG-2 files got corrupted simply by editing them! (I solved the problem by buying a special-purpose MPEG editor.)

The only problem I've ever had with MPEG2 ocurred when I used the 'Smart Render' feature in Video Studio. The resulting file was unstable and out of sync. Once I'd identified SR as the problem, I simply stopped enabling it and I haven't had a single problem capturing, editing/rendering or burning MPEG2 files since.

I've not been very long in this forum, but I don't remember someone having a problem when creating chapters in the Movie Factory part,
and I used as well VS9 as its counterpart DVDMF4 and it's quite stable.
Are you using AVI or MPEG movie file(s).
If MPEG. Did you generate this MPEG yourself from VS9, or is it something imported from an unknown source.
MPEG movies sometimes have "open" GOPs where the predictive frames are relative to an I frame that is not (no more) in the MPEG file, because it has been cut out. That is known to make a lot of programs sad.

Thank you!
Hi all! Thanks so much for all your advice. I've been out of town, so I haven't had a chance to try your advice. I will hopefully get to it today. My VideoStudio 9 came bundles with a piece of hardware (DVDXpress DX2). It connects my VCR to my computer, so I transfer movies from VHS to my computer. I'm not sure what format they are converted to. When I right-click on the file on my computer, it just says it's a "Movie Clip." I believe I set it to be MPEG-2... but that was a few weeks ago, so I'd have to do it again to be sure. I have a one-year-old... so maybe that will explain to you why I can't remember!
I'll post again when I get a chance to get back into it!
