Relinking -Saving to CD

Post by jimswinder »

Hey...I'm back...again. LOL

I saved my project to a folder at work then tried to access it from home via a VPN connection, but got the following error message:

Original file [C:\Documents and Settings\jwinder\My Documents\My Videos\Kelly_Video_Only.mpv] doesn't exist.

I also got similar messages involving different "segments" of the project.

The same thing happened when I saved the project to a CD and brough it home. So my question is this: Anyway to "capture" or save all the elements or segments the project is looking for to a CD so I can work on it from multiple computers without it trying to "relink"?

First, I am not at all sure what an *mpv file is...

That being said, I would think all the relevant files would need to be transferred to the computer you are working on at any one time for the VSP project file to be able to readily access them and relink. In other words, you would need both your project file (*.VSP) and all the relevant video and audio and image files on the one (or more) CD. Then copy and paste them onto the computer you are using at work. If you don't have the same folder structure on that computer, then of course you will be asked to relink the files. But that should work.

*.mpv = MPeg Video file, as when you have separate audio & video streams for authoring. The audio stream would be *.mpa, *ac3, *.wav (or LPCM) or whatever.

This 'Elementary Stream (ES)' format is required in some authoring packages and optional in most others. When the audio and video arew combined in one file it's a "Program Stream" (PS).

Jim;

Create a new folder anywhere (even on another systems shared drive), copy all the files in the VS Working Folder and the rendered file(s) there. Now in the VS Preferences relocate the Working Folder to that location temporarily.

Might even work if you changed it to the existing VS Working Folder of the system on your VPN or a copy of it in that systems Shared Documents folder.

The default location of your working file can be found in VS under File > Preferences > General > Working Folder (which is about 2/3 the way down the General screen). Unless you have designated some other folder, that is where they'll be.

Terry -- thanks for the explanation.  Once you mentioned it, I of course remembered I have seen that format at least mentioned a few times elsewhere, including at least once on this Board. But I have never had any hands-on experience with it, so it completely slipped my mind!!

The default location of the Working Folder is:

C:/documents & settings/<username>/my documents/videostudio/<version-number>

AKA: My Documents/VideoStudio/9.0 or 10.0 etc.

The dialog to change it is in VideoStudio at;

File/Preferences/General/Working Folder

about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Ok...I changed my preferences so my files are saved to "Ulead Working Files"...since I could not find the other...at least I don't think I could. Anyway...I still don't see the individual clips that make up that project in the folder...just the project. So is there a way to know, without remembering, to see what clips make up the project? I also have seperate Audio tracks... I suppose the answer is what I see in the library right? Unfortunatley, I have many clips in the libraries that are not used in the project. Am I making an easy thing difficult, once again?

Probably so, by not putting everything in the project in the Working Folder to start with ;)

To be honest MSPro makes ths much easier with its 'Smart Package' function, which lets you copy/move whole projects and their sources to a single folder for transport, archiving or whatever. It even bundles up HDV proxy files, trims etc. etc.

If you remember all the sources maybe copying them, the project et al in one folder & aiming VS there will help.

Hi Jim

For each project I work on I have a unique working folder, within that folder I would create sub folders, images, audio, vsp’s etc.
Every file/clip I use are saved within the working folder.

You say:-- So is there a way to know, without remembering, to see what clips make up the project? I also have seperate Audio tracks... I suppose the answer is what I see in the library right? Unfortunatley, I have many clips in the libraries that are not used in the project. Am I making an easy thing difficult, once again?

1 / If you right click any clip video, audio, image in the timeline and select properties the file name indicates the save location.
You can click the file name and use the arrow keys to scroll.

2 / If you use the Library Manager to create a new video library page.
Highlight all the video clips in the timeline and drag to the library. You have created a thumbnail copy of all used clips. (using VS 10 highlight the clips then copy and paste to library to keep the order in tact)

3 / If you move or rename a file on your hard drive then VS will ask for a re-link.
Moving files between pc’s need the same treatment.
Sometimes when vs requests a re-link , selecting the first will re-link all. Othertimes you have to re-link individual files (a bit of a pain.) Not sure why, but I think it works best when all files are in the same folder.

The only files that do not require a re-link are the Titles, they are part of VS structure.

Good house keeping is the secret. Its not hard to do if you start from the beginning.

I move many files from my step-daughters lap-top to my pc. The working folder structures are the same. Yes I have to re-link, but when the files are all in the same location its easy.

Hope this helps

Trevor
