After too many late nights in my home office and too much tweaking, deleting, installing, uninstalling and general playing around with various files, folders and programs on my PC, (I admit it!) I ended up having my full-version VS9 with-all-updates-installed program crashing whenever I tried to play an .MP3 file from the library or any other folder.
When a run through program repair didn't resolve the issue (To repair VS9: insert program disc, go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Click Ulead Video Studio 9 and choose Change/Remove, Repair and follow instructions), followed by a correctly done uninstall / reinstall (To correctly uninstall / reinstall VS9, follow instructions listed here: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 4223#54223), which also did not resolve the issue, I downloaded the (FREE) K-Lite Codec Pack 2.74 FULL (www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm).
Through the installation wizard, I unchecked anything not having to do with AUDIO codecs, especially .MP3, then said 'YES' whenever the program found broken codecs of any variety and let it delete that registry line. Once the K-Lite pack was installed - - - VS9 PROBLEM SOLVED!
This post is not meant as authoritative or conclusive; rather, it is a simple, plain-English fix that worked for me I thought perhaps other users having the same problem may want to try, especially when all else fails.
Here Is A Potential Fix For VS9 MP3 Codec Errors

The MP3 problem (bug?) is a well known one, as I think you know. I only ever suffered it once -- well, twice, since I repeated it as an experiment. But it first occurred with an MP3 I produced with Nero, which uses the Lame MP3 codec. So since then, I have avoided using Nero, and use instead those produced on Windows Media Player or the MusicMatch Jukebox (though I have not used the latter in over a year). Our usual advice would be to avoid using MP3 produced with the Lame codec, or else to convert the offending MP3s to WAV format, which also resolved the problem. More often than not these days, I too take this route for the simple reason that I want to edit the MP3, usually shortening it to fit into particular niches in my videos, and inserting things like fade ins or outs.
Normally, we recommend against people installing codec packs willy nilly. But in this case, you have obviously been very careful about what the particular pack did. So congratulations on your successful outcome!

Besides the paks often having old, broken or illegally cracked codecs there is another problem: trojans, viruses etc. I'm sure the guys at K_Lite weren't at fault, but this has happened to me twice.
IMO the better solution is to convert your sources to a common type in pre-production. I use .WAV because of its universality.
