VS9: Failed to open DVD. Report ID 0x800408ff(2003)

Post by amprior »

VideoStudio 9. Importing a home recorded DVD-VR. VS scans the menu structure and before displaying the titles and chapters selection page, reports "Failed to open DVD. Report ID 0x800408ff(2003)".

Can anyone expand on this cryptic error message ?

The disc is created on my Phillips HDRW720 system. One forum post suggested finalising the disc but I'm writting to a DVD+RW. There is no copy protection since this is a home video originating from camera.

All suggestions welcomed else my main use of VS9, editing archives, is failing me.

If the camcorder recorded on a (mini) DVD, you should be able to place it in your computer's DVD reader and copy it using Windows Explorer. If the video file arrives with a .VOB suffix, change it to ".mpg" and you should be able to open that in the Video Studio library. It should be now editable if it is not mpeg4 or some other highly compressed format.

Thanks for the advice John. I'm already doing .vob->.mpg to progress in my editing endevaours. I really wanted to resolve this since the VS import reads the .IFO file and maintains chapter and title markings and allows import of selected chapters as individual video clips to the timeline rather than a single video clip for the full title (A nice feature of VS since v8).

Thinking further on the finalising disc theme, I archived the same test files to a DVD+R (not DVD+RW). Damndest thing if it didn't work. Go figure!! I don't want to burn loads on DVD+R coasters just to transfer files and the recorder system doesn't have options other than DVD SneakerNet.

P.S. Using DVD-5 not mini-disc on a HD/DVD recorder

Anthony,
I had persistent difficulty with R/W disks in VS9, also. With version 10+, R/W suddenly started working again and has been working reliably every time I have burned DVDs (about 10, now). I presume that Ulead fixed some bugs in the burn module.

You might try upgrading VS, as a long shot possible solution to the problem.

Thanks for the VS10 advice, updating the common components made a difference. I now have some reliability in my specific environment/equipment. Some benefit came for buying brand new 4x capable DVD+RW discs; ones without my childrens chocolate covered fingerprints :-) but clearly PC's are far more sensitive to reading past minor defects than the Philips system is to writing. I'm convinced, without evidence, that using 4x discs in the philips 2.4x system has helped lots.

By way of an update and maybe of use for others.... I finally solved this.

If I Full Formnat the DVD-RW and archive the recording VS imprts precisely and repeatedely. If I use the Philipps system menu to "erase the disk" .... it does a quick erase, and then archive, VS repeaetdely fails to import titles.

I have yet to have time to ponder the difference. At least I have a repeatable way to archive and import titles.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
