Ugrade from XL to Ver 11 - Frustrations

Post by gsigso »

I'm hoping I'm not the first one with this experience and someone can help me.

I've been a XL user for over 3 years. I've decided to update to ver 11. Ordered it on-line from the Ulead mall. While I was waiting for it to be delivered I tried to install the trial version of version 11. This was unsuccessful, I kept getting a CRC error on a certain jpg file. I tried ignoring it, the installation crashed, reinstall, redownload, reinstall, no joy. So I gave up, uninstalled the trial and decided to wait for my upgrade CD in the mail.

Life it not much better with the upgrade CD. I've installed version 11 and patch 1. Crash with an error message that references iedit_.exe and mfc42.dll. Tried runing simple and clean installation from Ulead KB. No luck. I ran the MS System File Check, reran the update and patch 1 install. Same error message. My XL version appears to continue to work as before.

Anybody have any advice on how to proceed? :?:

Steve,

Thanks for the recommendations. I followed them with the follow exceptions:a) executed all steps in SAFE MODE and b) adjusted drive letter, my system drive is F and not C.

The first time I ran PI 11 after completing the recommended steps I received an error message for iedit_.exe referencing combo.dll. I decided to give up for the day. A few minutes ago I ran PI 11 a second time and received the error message for iedit_.exe referencing mfc42.dll.

My PI XL version now asks me to register when I start it. Of course I did that 3 years ago when I purchased and intalled it.

Any thoughts on how to proceed next? I have several other Ulead products on my machine: PI XL, VS 8, VS 10+, DVD Picture Show 3, MF 3 SE, Photoexpress Scrapbook. I don't recall ever having this type of problem installing software. Uggh!

Whilst using a different system drive letter theoretically shouldn't affect anything unfortunately there have been posts elsewhere in this forum which tend to suggest that some users do have problems.

I am also getting this crc/jpg error message. I am a first time Impact trier and want to check it out before spending money. I have download it 3 times and installed several time on this machine and another machine - same problem. I have tried cleaning out the files, re-booting and installing again, but no help. Teck support wont accept a form unless I register and I can't register if the program doesn't work. Any suggestions??

Both systems using win xp pro, 1 meg mem, lots of hard drive space.

The only thing that I can add to this CRC issue, is possibly a memory stick going bad. When I first purchased VS9 ESD version, with back-up CD, I constantly was getting CRC errors while trying to install. I was convinced it was Ulead's program, not my computer since no other application had these errors. However when I started having program crashes, more then just Ulead's I was advised to test my memory. Well doing so, I found that one stick was reported as bad. Luckily my memory stick was still under warranty and was replaced. This memory stick was less then 6 mos old. With the memory stick replaced I have not received any more CRC errors...

The utility recommend by a member of this forum, I used is Memtest86, and can be downloaded here: http://www.memtest86.com/.

Worth a try...:)

@gsigso
There is something wrong with your system. Which version of DirectX are you using? Do you have your latest video drivers and patches for your display adapter loaded?

@lemerich
without any info on your system, can't help you

To both of you, download the mem test utility suggested by vidoman.

Thanks guys, I'll try mem test in the morning, but I don't think that's the problem since it shows up on two entirely different machines.

This machine is an AMD 3200 64 bit cpu, with 512 mem, wrong number the first time. Just checked and my video drivers and Direct x is up to date. Video is ATI Radeon Xpress 200. Resolution set for 1152x864, 32 bit color.

Other machine is Intel 2800 with 1 meg mem, all latest updates. Video is NVIDIA GeForceFX5600T. Resolution set for 1152x864, 16 bit color.

Update on the install probleml. Ran memtest on both machines. Let the tests run for several hours while eating lunch and watching ball game. No errors found on either machine.
Ran Spybot and AdAware - cleaned up a few things. Ran Nortons - no virus found.
Ran the Impact un-install as per your instructions. Got rid of every byte of impact I could find.
Dis-abled Nortons and Windows firewall. Downloaded Impact again to a different hard drive.
Turned off machine for 5 minutes. Rebooted and re-installed the download. Guess what - we still have the same problem.
Did this on both machines and get the same message on both machines.
Since I see others having similar problems with the trial and full versions, It seem Impact has issues that need to be worked on. I've had e-mails from Versions 10 users who have no problem with 10, but did have with 11.

Any other suggestions. Thanks

combo.dll is a component of Ulead Photo Express. Try uninstalling PI11 and reinstalling without installing Photo Express. You can always add the component later when you find out what is stopping the program from running. Ordinarily it is a firewall, such as Zone Alarm or similar protective program.

Before reinstalling, search your drives and see if there is more than one copy of combo.dll. If there is rename any copies of combo.dll to combo.old. Do not delete them in case another program needs the DLL you can always change the name back.

I only found one reference of Combo.dll and it's listed in the Photo Impact folder.
When I install the downloaded version, I don't have a choice as to what's installed - it does the whold thing by itself.
In my case, it the crc/jpeg error message that I'm getting. I have a screen shot of the message, but don't know if attactments are allowed here. The actual error message is:

"CRC error. The filr C"\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11\Wcsdata\Sep\Dot & Dash_2\Sep_Dot & Dash_2.jpg doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor"

From here I have a choice of Abort, Retry, and Ignore. Abort kills the install, Retry does nothing except retry, Ignore continues to install some files, but evidently not all of them.
The install "medium" has been 3 different disc drives. The "contact your vendor" doesn't help, because Ulead teck won't answer questions unless I register, and I can't register unless I buy it. Kind of dumb to buy it if it doesn't work.

Yes, I wanted to findout if you had any other Ulead products installed. In your case it will not matter. You have a bad download and with a CRC you won't get this package installed. You will have to try and redownload in the hopes of getting a good install file. Try late at night when traffic is not so heavy. Turn off your screensaver and don't use your computer while the download is in progress, might help a little.

There are a few precautions you might before downloading.
Go into the Control Panel\Internet Options and delete the Cookies and Temp Internet files.
Defrag your hard drive.
Create A new Folder on the main drive called Temp. Download to this new Folder instead of My Documents.

It's all good an nice to have someone to blame for your problems. Sure there are people out there having problems with PI but there are a lot more people out there having no problem at all, including me.

One thing should be clear to everyone, if you have a download and get problems on two machines, the problem is your downloaded file, nothing else.

CRC errors signify a checksum error. Something doesn't tally with your downloaded file. Remove these programs from your systems and clean all temp files. Download another file as suggested before and try again.

If you are uncomfortable and would rather try a different program than Ulead, go right ahead. There is no point in trying to frighten us by suggesting that. We have nothing to lose if you prefer a different program, we are NOT Ulead. You are the ones losing out because the common consensus is that Ulead PI gives you the biggest bang for your buck.

Heinz, If this last post about frightning someone was directed at me, relax. Nowhere in my message did I suggest anything like that.
I have gone thru the whole cleaning routine on two machines twice and reinstalled. I have dumped the whole works and downloaded at least 6 different times. I like the idea of the biggest bang for the bucks, but I'm still working on the first buck. I agree there is a problem with the download, the error message even refers me back to the vendor. I'm trying to find out what the problem is so I can correct it and get a working copy.
I'm not trying to threaten or frighten anyone. I'm trying to get good useful help from the experts.
May I ask what your system is - mine does meet or exceed all the requirement listed.
