VS9 - unable to fit long proj w/o clipping in DVD burn

I burned a 1 1/2 DVD containing 9 related projects; length was stated to be about 5GB, and after hitting Burn, VS9 stated it was fitting it with a lower video rate. All was fine. After revising, I could not repeat this: first Burn gave a garbled warning (not an understandable Engl. sentence) so I tried Fit & Burn, which clipped the end off each sub-project. I then created new HQ Dolby disc template, using lower rates until VS9 claimed required disc DVD space was 4.33 GB -- yet even more was clipped off each sub-project when I burned the disc. Any idea what I did wrong and how to get over this hump?
