What is the best way to handle clips in different formats, 25 fps, 30 fps, wmv, avi, mpg (also considering DivX, XVid etc), different screen sizes, if I want to combine them to a video?
Put them in library and use as is, first convert and then put in library or just forget about it?
Is there a problem with editing this combination?
Oh, I know there will be quality losses, so forget about that in this question.

This is what the term 'preproduction' is all about; getting your ducks in a row.
I always convert multliple sources into a common format & frame size before starting to edit. More often than not this is MJPeg. I use both the Morgan and MainConcept MJPeg's set to a high quality, which is nearly lossless and handy when you're adding a lot of effects. It also encodes to MPEG for DVD's quickly.
Both are blistering fast even on light duty systems, and if you have an analog capture card (All in Wonder, Hauppage etc.), can be used for high quality capturing.

How to do it? I use Files/Convert/Mutiple Files in MSPro 7/8, Tools/Batch Convert in VideoStudio 9/10 or if I'm using one of these for an edit I run the Stoik Video Converter in the background. Stoik comes in two versions, one is free, and it's fast and small.
