VS10 closes when converting to mpeg

VS10 closes when converting to mpeg
I just bought VS10 and have tried several times to create a video file in mpeg format (1, 2) or even as "Same as project settings) and everytime I do, at the end of rendering the mpeg, the system shuts down.
When I reopen it, the video will not play in VS10 but it will play in my media player. I have read some of the posts on this board. How does a file you just created become corrupt?
I have all the requirements Pentium 4, 512, 80g hard drive.....
Can anyone help with this?

Please fill out the system spec portion of your profile sp we have a jumping-off point. As much other info as you can muster; Windows/DirectX version, source file info (DV, MPEG, DivX etc.), MPEG output settings, Project settings, HDD filesystem etc. etc., would be extremely useful.
That said have you set up an editing profile for your computer? The tutorial is here;

Bilc,
Please read the following post, and provide as much information it asks for. Without it we will not know how to proceed.

SUBJECT: Video Studio 10 won't render mpeg format videos...HOWEVER...it will produce .wmv files
Nature of the problem: When going to the SHARE tab, the program goes through the process of rendering the mpeg file, but upon apparent completion, I get a message saying "Ulead Video Studio 10 has encountered a problem and must close"
Properties of your source files: .mod video from new JVC Everio Digital Camcorder. Also, DVD's burned from home video tapes.
What devices are involved and their mode of connection? Home made DVD's, JVC Everio camcorder
Project Settings: NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
System information[/i] In my profile
Hope this helps, thank you.

I see at least one problem that VS is probably choking on. If I understand correctly, you have mixed the *.mod files and MPEG-2 (from DVDs), correct?
The review I read on your camcorder Found Here, it states that it records in MPEG-2 to HDD. If that is the case is there a way to copy or transfer the MPEG-2 files to your computer's HDD? Then import those into VS?
Basically what I'm eluding to is to have all the clip properties the same. If your final product is to be a DVD, then using the MPEG-2 format would be better. I must say that I'm not familiar with the *.mod format, and I don't see it showing up in the available formats to import. So that leads me to my next question. How are you getting the clips into your computer, Firewire (IEEE1394), USB 2.0 or another method?

Ok,
I see that now. Another one of Ulead's hidden items. The only place I found it was on the comparison page. So yes it does, and I still am not familiar with it.
Ok so I'm still not clear on if you are mixing the mod and MPEG-2 in the same project.
I think we need to back up a bit to clear up some possible issues.
1. Are you editing the video clips, the going to Share>Create Video File?
2. If you are, then are you clearing the timeline (New Project), then with an empty timeline going to Share>Create Disc? Or are you skipping the step to Share>Create Video File?
You might want to read through Steve's tutorial From Camcorder to DVD with VideoStudio.

No, I am dragging the .mod files in to the time line, editing, then going to Share/create video file.
Then I select the mpeg option and that is when it does it's rendering thing. All loks good until ti is finished, then as it is trying to create the thumbnail in the video folder for playback, it crashes.
Here is an interesting thing. Just to see if it was a video issue, I created a 30 second photo-only project. There was no video involved. So I have 10 photos at 3 seconds each, I click Share/create video file and ask it to make an mpeg.
And even with photos only, it still shuts down at the end.
Is it me or is there a problem with the program?
Thanks.

Are you running any background applications? These include antivirus, spyware/adaware, screensavers, etc...
You listed that you have an 80 gig harddrive, however how much free space do you have? Open My Computer then right-click on C:\ and choose properties, what does it say for free space? If you don't have enough room for VS to create the temp files, then it may choke.
Also in VS Preferences (F6), where do you have your Working Folder Set? Navigate to that folder using Windows Explorer and see if there are a bunch of files in that folder. If so delete them, so VS will have an empty folder to work with. VS generally will clean that folder of Temp Files once it is done. However I think it is possible that's not happening since it is crashing on you. Then navigate to your Temp Folder and delete all files located in that folder. You will need to have Show Hidden Files/Folders activated. To do that in Windows Explorer, Tools Menu>Folder Options>View. Scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders and make sure the radio button beside Show Hidden Files and Folders is checked. Now navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username Here\Local Settings. You should see a folder called Temp. Open it and delete everything inside.
You can also navigate to your Windows Temp Folder and clean it out. (C:\Windows\Temp).
When is the last time you have Defragmented your Hard drive? You should do so on a regular basis. Windows Defrag will do the job, however not as well as some like Disckeeper.
Lastly, It may be that VS has some corrupted files. If you have the Retail CD (not the back-up that you can order when purchasing the download), you can try to do a Repair (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs).
If not then try doing a Clean unistall (See Steve's Tutorial on how to do this found Here).

I have 38g of free space and I am doing my work in a "video editor" profile.
I have created a profile with no running background images, no anti-virus, none of that stuff. I even disabled internet connections in this profile.
I don't have the CD. I downloaded the program from ULead.
Thanks for your help.
