Color Correcting in VS10 +

Post by bilc »

Need advice.. I have two clips that were caputred with a color camera that had it's automatic white balance not working correctly. These were indoor shots using video lights. The clips are well lit but are over saturated with color giving flesh tones a deep gold color which is un-natural in appearance. I've tried several filters in VS 10 with many different combinations of adjustments and the best I did was with the hue and saturation filter set at Hue -10 and sat -43. This gave a very presentable appearance. The only problem was when playing the clip there is a grainie appearance throughout the clip. I tried the de-noise filter which made matters worse. I've tried backing off on saturation but that effects the fleshtones. I have Pinnacle Studio ver 9 plus which has a good color correction but I don't what to re-install that entire program again just to fix these two clips. Someone mentioned a plug in software for color correction but I can't find it on the web. Anyone ever this problem ? if so how did you fix it.
Thanks for a reply

If its a short clip then perhaps you could make it deliberately different - such as monochrome, sepia (duotone) or use one of the various filters such as
Charcoal
Coloured Pen
Comic
and so on.

Try using the 'Auto Level' video filter. Even if it isn't perfect it could get you within range of the others.

I second that, even better, auto exposure will give you a usually horrible result BUT it tries to balance all colors, making it much closer to the ideal.
THEN as a second filter use Brightness.

This filter is vastly underrated because it is better than Lighting, Color, Hue/Sat and Auto's taken together. Not only can you change brightness (it's face value but the less useful) but also contrast and above all gamma correction, and the icing on this cake it does it all on general level and on each separate color, with keyframes anywhere you like.

And since you have an original/after preview you almost hit the right combination just by playing with the cursors (and admittedly a litlle feeling and educated guesses). In your case I would begin by increasing gamma of the blue channel.

Also see if the white balance as often, improves over time and balance the effect of the filter from begin to end. Remember people are less sensitive to correct color than to steady colors. Even if too red or too green, it will not shock the unsuspecting human if it's stable. The thing to avoid is change, so if you have too different color in adjacent clips, insert a colorfule transition, or a filling scene (a flower, a river, a close up) to let people forget about the previous color.

Luckily our eyes are much more tolerant than our ears...

Color Correcting in VS 10+

Post by bilc »

Ok guys.....I finally located a stand alone color correcting program that does a great job of correcting color and saturation problems. The software is a 15 day trial and costs $ 29,95 US dollar. I've been able to fix my saturation problem with great results The name of the program is Videomach Ver 3.5.2
It can do many other jobs and I believe it's worth the price as an add-on tool. The only drawback is that it renders the video clips in mpeg 1 format. Now here is my question, when capturing a clip it's in mpeg 2 format and VS 10 - renders that clip in mpeg2 format ( DVD ) Since this program renders in mpeg 1 what happens when it is re-rendered with VS 10 into mpeg2 ? Is any quality lost, I really do not see any difference. I think the answer should come from someone with knowledge on both formats.
Thanks
