overlay graphic / mask pixelation

Post by tamaker »

Im trying to add a 'mask' to lay over a video Im editing in VS8.

The masking effect works fine, the file is a 300DPI photoshop file thats layered to create the mask area of transparency... problem Im having is Im getting some wicked pixelation where the overlay image has 'curves' -- where it has straight edge lines the pixelation is fine.

How can I resolve this? I also have Macromedia Freehand and Fireworks if those would be more ideal for something like this.

Thanks!

What's the video format?

Is the image a bitmap, or a compressed format that has to be converted?

"DPI" doesn't mean much, since we don't know what the "I" is... :? It probably works-out to higher resolution than your video, which might be 720x480 pixels. The number of pixels-per-inch depends on the size of the display, and it will be much less than 300ppi, unless you have a very tiny screen! :P

You create an overlay mask in greyscale. White is transparent and shows the bottom (Background) picture. Black Shows the overlay (foreground) picture, shades of grey shows each with varying amounts of transparency dependant upon the level of grey.

Your 300dpi means silch for a display on any screen. It's a measure of how many dots a printer places along a line of 1 inch length. It also gives the printed image a certain size in real terms.

Your PC screen can only show 72 ppi (pixels per inch) but has a much better resolution than your TV will ever have.

To avoid the problem you are getting, follow the previous advice first and don't use a compressed format, secondly size the mask to proper size for your TV standard. That way, you will avoid a video program to resize your mask for display. An image editing program will give you clearer lines than a video editor. In video, there is no such thing as a clearly defined line because it usually also involves movement. For movement to show smoothly you have motion blurr and that, you don't want for your mask.
