How to insert titles somewhere other than the end

Post by johnmnz »

VS 10.0. I have captured a tape split into about 100 scenes. I'd like to insert photos with words added as titles in various places in the project. But when I click on the Insert image button and build my title picture, it getsw put at the end of the timeline rather than where I want it. It is really hard work to then drag it to where it is wanted. Can I create it in the right place to start with?

If your video is already on the timeline, then anything you add will automatically go to the end. Welcome to non-linear editing! You could start a brand new project and add a clip, then an image, then more clips, then another image, etc. It's all a matter of what works best for you.

If you want the title at the beginning create it first, then add the video clips. You can also drag it anywhere along the timeline or place it on the title track, in which case it'll overlay the underlying video.

Time to crack the manual ;)

Thanks - knowing that this is the way it has to be done makes it somehow more acceptable. I like to film title shots (street signs etc) as I go along rather than have boring ole titles so it's really only the main title I need to insert. And I did RTFM - the titles section shed little light on the subject. Incidentally, my "Burn" has now been running for 56 minutes and says it has converted 90% of the title. Either there's something wrong with the software (as in it is actually doing something else) or that is the slowest JPG converter I've ever come across.

You can insert stills (for any purpose) anywhere you wish in the timeline - by simply first importing them to an 'Image' library - you can import multiple stills to a library using standard windows selection techniques - and then dragging and dropping them into the timeline wherever you want them to be - only proviso is that the video must be split at the point you want to do the insertion.

Alternatively drop them into the overlay track - which means they can be absolutely anywhere.

Text for a title is inserted into the title track at the position of the timeline cursor - so just set the cursor before you type your title.

If you're using the one built into Windows, yes it's slow.

I use one of two commercial MJPeg's: Morgan Multimedia or MainConcept. Both are ~$20, blistering fast, configurable and high quality.

Morgan;

MainConcept;

Morgan is more configurable, but both are excellent and so fast you can do analog captures with very basic CPU's.
