When importing from a DVD, the program hangs at 61%.
I have a DVD recorder and record shows from tv which I want to save as DVD's using both Video Studio 9 and Movie Factory 5 but when I try to import the programs from the DVD, they always hang at 61%.
How can I get around this?

Brand/model of recorder? Brand/type of media used in same? Brand/model of CD/DVD drive/burner?
Have you installed the latest Ulead DVD burner patch?

We're good, but unfortunately not telepathic

Sorry for the lack of info. I'm new to this but need help.
My recorder is a Panasonic DVD-S55.
I'm use Memorex 16x DVD+R media in the recorder.
My computer DVD burner is a HP DVD 740.
I didn't have the DVD patch installed but have done so now but I'm still getting the same results. While initiating the DVD when trying to import from my drive, the program locks up and I have to use CTRL - Alt - Delete to "end the process" to continue.
I appreciate your help.

Just to confirm you're importing the DVD files correctly please view this tutorial:

Presuming you're doing as Steve's tutorial suggests....let's try a workaround. Create a folder in the root of your video drive then copy the discs contents into it. Now try and import the data into VS or MF from there.
If it works then you at least have a procedure, even if it takes an extra step. If it doesn't then at least you know the fault is more likely in the file or VS/MF. If it were the disc Windows most times should throw an error during the file copy.
<soapbox mode on>
Now it's advice time: use DVD-everything drives like an LG, Mad Dog ($40 !!), Sony, Panasonic etc. that can read/write DVD-RAM discs.
I always use DVD-RAM media in the recorder if I plan on importing it into the computer. I too have Panasonic recorders (4) and this is what works best for me.
Why? Because some 'normal' recordable discs are finnickey when it comes to moving them from one drive to another.
Whole sections of sites like videohelp.com are dedicated to which brand/batch of DVD recordables are 'good', and far too many 'bad' discs have major brand stickers on them.
On the other hand DVD-RAM has a robust error correction system that in my experience mitigates this problem.
DVD-RAM's are also quickly erasable (unlike RW's) and therefore better for use as a transfer media. Also handy is that WinXP treats them like a HDD and they're less prone to problems in Panasonic recorders because most of them are made by Panasonic.
Like I said; MY experience after wasting far too much time trying to sort out the media issues when transferring.

I tried Steve's steps for importing DVD's and can't get past step 2. That's where it hangs up on me. In MF5 it shows the import stopping at 61% and in VS9 it stops at about the same place on the bar although VS9 doesn't show the actual percentage.
I tried copying the TS folder to my hard drive as you suggested. When I tried importing that way, I get a Windows error message.
Next, I will try your suggestion of using DVD RAM discs if they will work in my recorder.
Thanks for all your help. Would upgrading to VS10 make any difference?

Do you mean you are unable to copy the TS folder to the hard drive?calvinbaisley wrote:I tried Steve's steps for importing DVD's and can't get past step 2. That's where it hangs up on me. If so you have a faulty disc.

Yes, it would have cost you more not to be able to do what you want.calvinbaisley wrote:....

Seriously though, what makes you think that your problem is a VS problem? Let's find out the reason for your problem first.
If your car doesn't start although there is petrol in the tank, buying a different brand of petrol is not likely to fix your problem, is it?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions to my problem. I still have not obtained the DVD RAM disk to try but I did get a working work around for my problem.
I was able to import the movies from my recorded DVD's using Nero, so I guess it was not a faulty disk problem. Now I have the videos in .mpg format on my hard drive so I can make my DVD using the menus from MF5. It would be nicer to be able to do it all in MF5 but this will do.
Again, thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
