VS10 Trial Capture problem

Post by ripped53 »

I'm new here and I'm very interested in the VS10 software to use to capture my precious home video tapes.

I am only able to capture in AVI or MP4 format. When I attempt to use any other setting I receive a "MPEG capture does not accept HCW2 codec. Please select a suitable codec from the video format list. It is recommended to use codec (1) YUV codec first, then (2) RGB-24 codec"

Could someone please help to shed some light on this problem? Are there limitations to the trial software, or am I having a compatability problem? I have a Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II card, XP, and 64X2.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

It looks like that codec is specific to that capture card.

I found this via Google and "HCW2 codec". I'm sure there is more info out there on this codec.

Your hauppauge card has a hardware MPEG-2 encoder, and it only captures to MPEG format. (It doesn't need a software codec.)

I recommend that you use the WinTV2000 capture software that came with your Hauppauge card. (That's what I do.)

Once you have an MPEG file on your hard drive, you can use Video Studio (or Movie Factory) to make a DVD.

One little warning in case you are planning on editing your precious videos (cutting, splicing, crossfades, etc.) - MPEGs are not meant to be edited. Some people have no problems, but some of us have resorted to buying special-purpose MPEG editing software.

I had the same problem (I created a very similar thread here that got a number of responses that might interest you).

I still can't capture in VS10, I have to use other software (Sonic) to capture.

One MPEG editing software that people use is called Womble.
